Safe, Durable Toys Best for Youngsters Carefully selected toys will give children many happy hours of safer, constructive play. Poorly chosen toys, on the other hand, will collect dust on the shelf or need repairing a few days after Christmas. Many winding and friction-drive toys are limited in their use and are not recommended for children. On the other hand, blocks, logs and other such toys will help develop a child’s creativity. If you choose a doll as a gift, be sure it is durable. Check the arms to see that they will bend easily. Also see that Uie fingers are not spread out so that it is difficult to dress the doll. Make Clothee Simple Doll clothes should be attractive, yet made so the child can manage them herself. They should open down either the front or the back and fasten with snaps, large but tons or ties. The construction and material used in toys is also important. Since hard plastics break easily, soft plastics, metal and wood are better for toys. Inspect metal toys carefully to be sure there ere no sharp edges. THE GIFT OF LOVE AT CHRISTMAS The Child of Bethlehem comes to us again this Christmas and we rejoice in the knowledge that He has brought us the gift of love for our fellowman. Fired by the courage and inspiration of the man who became known as “the father of his country,” a tattered band of patriots crossed the dangerous river of ice and marched to Tren ton where they surprised and hum bled the Hessian mercenaries and recorded a great Christmas story in the pages of American history. Old Legends Concern Magic Mule and Camel Among the many legends about Christmas that concern animals, two of the most interesting are the Magic Mule and the Camel of Jesus. A Syrian legend says that a cer tain traveler tied his mule to a tree and jvent into an inn for re freshment on Epiphany Eve. Just at midnight, when the boughs of the tree bowed down in homage to the Holy Infant, the mule was caught up on the rebound and found cradled high up in the branches by its returning master. Another legend holds that the youngest camel of the three ridden by the Wise Men was exhausted by the pressing journey and was blessed with immortality by the baby Jesus as it lay moaning near the Nativity scene. TIME TO REMEMBER ... A visit with Santa is a high spot in a young life as well as the time to remember whether a little girl has earned Santa’s stamp of approval for her stellar conduct throughout the year. CUTE CUTOUT ... A novel Santa cutout can easily be made by the children in the house and will lend a cheerful spirit to home surroundings. Tm Hnll 1,1.11 At Will at Prttty Make sure your Christmas tree this year is as safe as it Is attrac tive. The way to do it is to keep th# butt of the tree in water whlh it’s in the house. Keeping the tree in water will help to prevent dryness that may mean a fire haaard. It will also keep the needles from dropping so rapidly. When you select your tree, try to find out how long it has been cut. It will jiast longer if it has been cut recently. Balsam fir makes the best Christmas tree, but Douglas fir is nearly aa good. Becoming increas ingly popular are the pine trees— Scotch, rad, white and jack— which hold their needles from two to four weeks. Spruce trees will hold their needles only from three to ten days in the house. Holiday Treats Pies for the holiday party can be “trimmed” to add to the fes tivity of the occasion. With a mince pie, cut a star opening in the center and place small red candles in the pte so each wedge will have one. Form a circle of whipped cream around a choco late pie, then place a small candy cane where each wedge will be. It will make a big hit at a chil dren's Yuletide party.
