BOYS ARE
THAT WAY
ly J. M. ILlASt*
Much of our life centered
around the church in the Stone
• Hilln of the Dutch Fork when I
wan coming up. Four *m*ll
country churche* nupported one
preacher. With home and buir-
(ty, he aure had to yet around,
making viaita, and gettting to
each church twice a month.
Our morning preaching wan
alwaya on fourth Sunday. And
then on aecond Sunday after*
noona. The whole family went
to church. Including the baby.
And if he hollered too loud, the
mother would take him out and
ait under a tree.
Aa a kid, it aeemed to me the
aermona were awful long. They
were rather long then, but the
main trouble I think wan 1
didn't underat and what the good
man waa talking about. He had
gotten hia (earnin' and thought
he had to uae It. That waa be
fore the day of almpllfled writ
ing and apeoch that rather Ig
norant folka like I waa could un-
deratand.
Our church behavior fell Into
a definite pattern. Folka would
get there a half hour before
Sunday School waa to begin,
unhitch their home* and tie
them in the ahade, get a drink
of water from a well at the
houae acroaa the road, or walk
down in the wood* to the apring
for It. Then they'd go to the
church. The men grouped there
under the oak tree* and either
uquatted or aat on the large
root* that were aboveground In
the eroded yard. The women
and email children went in the
church and eat to talk a while.
We boy* akirted the edge of the
men'a group out there under the
tree*. Anti wcaaionallv one nt
the men wanted to tell aome*
thing he didn’t want u^ to hear
and he’d **n> aomethinu like
thla, "You xoune.’un*. net on out
there ami play." We Knew what
wa* up and obeyed.
Kxenluallv the organ started,
and'that wu* a signal tor all ot
the Kid* to eoiue in tor Sundn\
School, while the men stayed
out there under the shade ot
the tree* ami talked. More ot
