Rites For Wreck
Victim Tuesday
Mrs. Maggie Green Thrift, 42,
wife of George R. Thrift of Whit
mire, was pronounced dead on
arrival at a Columbia hospital
Saturday afternoon from injur
ies she received in an automobile
accident on highway 76 about
eight miles from Columbia.
Mrs. Thrift was born and rear
ed in Hayward County, N. C.,
and was the daughter of Charlie
and Mary Cody Green. She had
made her home in Whitmire for
a number of years and was an
employee of Aragon - Baldwin
Mill of J. P. Stevens Co. Mrs.
Thrift was a member of the As
sembly of God in Whitmire.
Surviving are • her husband,
George R. Thrift of Whitmire;
three sons, Anderson A. Thrift
and William Edward Thrift, both
of Whitmire, Henry Raymond
Thrift, U. S. Navy, Great Lakes,
111.; two daughters, Mrs. Grace
Wilbanks and Miss Shelby Jean
Thrift, both of Whitmire; her
parents of Grand Rapids, Mich.;
four sisters, Miss Rachel Green
of Stecoia, N. C., Mrs. Dolly Col
lins of Gastonia, N. C., Mrs. No-
la Wilson of Grand Rapids, Mich.,
Mrs. Dessie Higgins of Columbia;
four brothers, Theodore Green of
Stecoia, Ulas Green, Dewey Green,
and Harley Green, all of Grand
«Radips, Mich., and three grand
children.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at 5 p. m. at the Church
of God in Whitmire by Rev. Bob
Coggins'^Rev. Paul Moss, Rev. B.
R. Nichols and Rev.. Pitts. Burial
■was in the Whitmire Cemetery.
D. L. Wessinger
Dies In Columbia
Dueman Leo Wessinger, 30, of
Route 1, Pomaria, died Fiiday
night at the Veterans Administra
tion Hospital in Columbia. He had
been in ill health for the past five
years and seriously ill for three
days before his death.
Mr. Wessinger was born and
reared in Lexington County, a son
of Jonas L. and Essie Taylor Wes
singer. He had lived a number of
years in the Hartford section of
Newberry County prior to moving
to Pomaria. He was a member of
Bethlehem Lutheran Church and
a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Eth
el Morse Wessinger; one* son,
Larry Dueman, of the home; his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. John L
.Wessinger of Newberry; one sis-

Virgil Graham, Hugh Leitzsey and
Walter Cromer.
Honorary escort was composed
of the members of Bethlehem
Lutheran Church Council; Dr. C.
A. Pinner and Waldo C. Huffman.

At Great Lakes
GREAT LAKES, IU.—Gradua
tion of the special South Carolina
recruit company Saturday high
lights the Navy’s “Salute to South
Carolina” week which started
Monday and ends Sunday.
Along with the generaj public,
a delegation of prominent citi
zens and South Carolina alumni
of Great Lakes will be present
when the newly-trained Bluejack
ets pass in review.
An invitation to all citizens of
South Carolina has been extend
ed by Great Lakes officials to
visit the center, during “South
Carolina Week” or any time dur
ing the giant summer-long open
house. Great Lakes Navy Home
coming.
A huge display depicting the
evolution of today’s modern Navy
will be on exhibit at the center.
Included are guided missiles, mod
el ships, a model of the Navy’s
Project Vanguard earth satellite,
and a Cutlass jet plane one of the
Navy’s newest jet fighters.
Meantime, the men in the South
Carolina company are getting
ready for their graduation on
Saturday morning.
Despite the excitement of their
forthcoming graduation and wait
ing for their orders, the South
Carolinians kept on their rigorous
training schedule.
A lesson in team-work was
learned when they manned the
oars of small boats on Lake Mich
igan for their first abandon ship
drill. Each man also had to
qualify in the use of small arms
on the rifle range.

GREENVILLE, July 30.—Presi-
dent W. W. McEachern of The
South Carolina National Bank has
announced that Chauncey W. Lev
er of Anderson will join the bank
in the position of vice* president
in charge of the newly created
Commercial and’Industrial Devel
opment Division of the bank ef
fective September first. A branch
of the S. C. National Bank is lo
cated in Newberry.
Mr. Lever is presently employed
as Director of Public Relations
for the 27 plants of Abney Mills
and Erwin Mills in South Caro
lina, North Carolina, and Mississ
ippi.
In announcing the new SCN
Commercial and Industrial De
velopment Division, President Mc
Eachern said that among its ma
jor objectives will be the selling
of South Carolina to the nation
and the world, bringing of new in
dustries and businesses to South
Carolina, the encouragement of
the expansion of industries and
other firms which are already lo
cated in South Carolina, the en
couraging of the development of
new industries within South Caro
lina, the rendering of all possible
assistance to existing industries,
and the promotion of a greater
appreciation of the value of indus
try among the people of South
Carolina.
Athis street, New Orleans, La.,
completed two weeks of active
duty training July 28 at Camp
Wolters.
While at the camp, Kibler stud
ied civil affairs and military gov
ernment for occupied countries.
After completing his annual sum
mer training he returned to h i?
local reserve unit in New Orleans.
Major Kibler, son of Mrs. Bes
sie Kibler, Pomaria, S. C., was
graduated from Clemson A & M
College in 1925.
Kendall Sales Up
In Second Quarter
The Kendall Company reported
net earnings of $798,000 on sales
of $24,723,000 for the twelve
weeks ended June 15, 1957, com
pared with earnings of $1,073,000
on sales of $23,565,000 for the
corresponding period last year.
Based on the number of shares in
the hands of the public at the end
of each period, net earnings Spr
the twelve weeks, after preferred
dividends, amounted to $0.75 per
common share as against $1.02
per share in the same period of
1956.
For the first twenty-four weeks
of 1957, net earnings were $1,665,-
000, or $1.57 per common share on
sales of $49,397,000, compared
with earnings of $2,281,000 or
$2.17 per share on sales of $48,-
800,000 last year.
Richard R. Higgins, president,
noted that results for the year to
date reflect, in part, the impact
of lower textile selling prices and
of operations and expenses of
three new plants that have not
yet reached normal standards of
performance. Although third
quarter shipments generally show
a seasonal decline, he added, the
trend of incoming business indi
cates the probability of further
improvement over 1956 sales vol
ume as the year progresses.
