Miss Fant Gets
Digest Award
Edna Earle Fant, valedictorian
of the graduating class at Silver-
street High School, has been
given the Annual Award of the
Readers Digest Association for
students who by their sucessful
school work give promise of at
taining leadership in the com
munity, it was announced today
by superintendent J. G. Long.
Edna Earle will receive an hon
orary subscription to The Readers
Digest for one year and an en
graved certificate from the Ed
itors, “in recognition of past ac
complishment and in anticipation
of unusual achievement to come.”
The award to Edna Eargle, who
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
T. M. Fant of Silverstreet, was
made possible through the co
operation of Superintendent Long
and his teaching staff. They sel
ected Edna Earle to receive the
award, designed to stimulate
scholarship, citizenship, and con
tinued contact with good reading
after graduation.
Mrs. Baker To
Be Speaker At
Alumni Meeting

Mrs. Frank Welborn, of Ander
son, president of the Anderson
College Alumni Association, has
announced that Mrs. Richard L.
Baker will be convocation speaker
for the Alumni Day Saturday,
May 18 at the college.
Convocation is scheduled for
11:15 a. m., with the Alumni
Luncheon at 1 p. m. in the col
lege dining hall.
Mrs. Baker received an A. B.
from Anderson College prior to its
transition to a junior college. She
is the daughter of the late Can
non Gary *Blease, a niece of the
late U. S. Senator Cole L. Blease,
and niece of the former Chief Jus
tice of the state Supreme Court,
Eugene S. Blease.
Active in religious, civic and
social work in Newberry and
throughout the state, Mrs. Baker
is now co-ordinater of Women’s
Activities for her community for
the S. C. Civil Defense Associa
tion. She is a past president of

Bus Drivers

Nominations for the best stu
dent school bus drivers in each of
the state’s six transportation dist
ricts have been made to the coun
ty superintendents, and the final
winners will be announced about
June 15.
The best white and Negro driv
er in each district will be present
ed a $25 cash award by the South
Carolina State Automobile Asso
ciation, said Ernest Sesisons, vice
president of the motor club.
Purpose of the competition is
to promote safe school transporta
tion and make student bus drivers
more safety conscious. The con
test has been endorsed by R. M.
Hendrix, state supervisor of trans
portation, State Educational Fin
ance Commission, and State
Highway Department.
Contestants will be rated large
ly on their records, driving skill
and attitudes. The drivers are be
ing selected in the following man
ner:
Each school district or area sup
erintendent selected the best
white or Negro driven in his
school and nominated them to the
county superintendent of educa
tion. The county superintendent
selects the best White and Negro
drivers from their county and
nominate them to the area sup
ervisor of transportation. These
area supervisors, with a commit
tee of several county superintend
ents, will pick the final winners
from each transportation district.
The bus drivers of Newberry
County, chosen to participate in
the state contest are: best white

the Bush River area; best Negro
