Dies In Fire;
Native of City
SHELBY, N. C., April 30.—A
Negro physician burned to death
in his office here early today but
Shelby police and firemen tonight
had been unable to determine
what caused the pre-dawn explo
sion and fire.
Dr. W. G. Singleton, 34, a native
of Newberry, S. C., who had prac
ticed medicine here since 1947,
was burned beyond recognition in
the fire that broke out about 1:30
a. m., in *the second-story offices"
of a two-story brick building three
blotks northeast of Shelby's
square.

two of his three children. His wife
is studying at Tennessee State-
Teachers College at Nashville. The
other child arrived here today
with the doctor's mother after a*
visit in Newberry.
An autopsy report by Dr. R. C.
Henry of Shelby Hospital attrib
uted death to burns.
Associates of Dr. Singleton said
he had taken sides in a contrtK ;
versy at a Shelby Negro high,
school, but police said they could
find no connection between this
and the mysterious explosion and
fire.
Dr. Singleton was the son of
Mrs. Nancy P. Singleton, who is a
teacher in the Newberry County
School district. His father, who-
died several years ago, was own
er of Singleton’s Drug Store in-
Newberry.
