In February 1954 the new lib rary building was dedicated and named Wessels library. The Wes- sels family of Savannah, Georgia t?ave a generous amount toward the completeion of the building. The largest part of the cost of "the building came from the Christ ian Education Year Appeal of the United Lutheran church. Dr. Kinard resigned as presid- ont of the college in March 1954 after having served 24 years as head of the institution. His bril liant administration was one of growth, expansion and strength* ening of the institution. C. A. Kaufmann, A.M., (later LL-D.) who was serving the col lege as Director of Public rela tions and Assistant to the Presi dent, was made Acting President. In May 1955 the Board of Trus tees elected him the tenth presi dent of Newberry college. President Kaufmann, an alum nus of the college and the Univer sity of South Carolina, is a nat ive of Lexington, South Carolina. He came to the presidency of his alma mater with a widely varied background of service to the in stitution. In addition to his work as Director of Public Relations and Assistant to the President, he had been the first registrar of the college, instructor in Spanish, Latin, psychology, and public re lations, and director of the Col lege orchestra. He was formally inaugurated on September 28, 1955. His short administration has in cluded significant advances in the improvement of the physical plant, the financial structure, and the inner workings of the insti tution. C. with a new fence, scoreboard, lights and steel stands for Setz- ler Field, a retirement and group insurance coverage for the facul ty, and a grant of approximately $71,600 from the Ford Foundation to be used by the College in rais ing faculty salaries. Most significantly, in 1954 the College launched the Pre-Centen nial Building and Endowment Fund Campaign for $500,000 in the South Carolina and Georgia- Alabama Synods. Under the gen eral chairmanship of Supt. H. Odelle Harmon, LL.D., this cam paign was brought to a successful completion with pledges totalling $535,010.06. At its 1956 meeting the Florida Synod took action to raise $25,000 for the College. A part of the proceeds of the campaign has been used to con struct and equip a new dormitory with facilities for one hundred fifty men at a total cost of $210,- 124.77. Acting on a recommendation of the Athletics Council, the Board of Trustees decided to name the College gymnasium in honor of F. D. MacLean, who taught at New berry College and directed the athletics program for 17 years- Special ceremonies for the naming of MacLean Gymnasium were held in connection with a homecoming game on October 29, 1955. As early as 1930 students at the Col lege had suggested that the gym nasium be named for Coach Mac- Lean. In the blueprint stage now are two additional buildings, a dormi tory and student union building, soon to be constructed on the campus. Westminster Fellowship The Westminster Fellowship is composed of students in institu tions of higher education who are members of or have a prefer ence for the Presbyterian church. The main purpose of WF is to lead youth to grow in effective Christian living and to be a con necting link between the campus and the Church. International Relations Club The International Relations Club is sponsored by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and is maintained primarily for the purpose of promoting a better understanding of national and international affairs. Students of history who have a high schol astic standing and! who are inter ested in world affairs are eligible for membership. Phi Tau Phi Tau is one of the oldest organizations on the campus of NeWberry College. It is primarily interested in developing the social attributes which every college student should possess. The mem bers are chosen upon a high scholastic, moral and personality basis; and are approved by the faculty. During the year many activities are planned for the en joyment of the members and their guests. Block ‘N’ Club The membership of this organi zation is made up of those young men who participate in a high percentage of varsity games of one or more of the major sports of the college. The Block “N” Club is in charge of the conces sion stand at all games. Crim, Prof. W. Darr Wise, Prof. Charles P. Pruitt, Dr. Milton W. Moore. The Department of Music is headed by Dr. Milton W. Moore, Ed-D., who is also director of The Newberry College Singers. Charles P. Pruitt, A.B., is instructor in Music (band instruments) and Director of the Newberry College Band and Orchestra. Jack S. Crim, M.Mus., is Assistant Pro fessor of Music (Voice and Theory) and W. Darr Wise, M. Mus-, is assistant professor of Music (Piano and Organ). Miss Mary Margaret Pope, B.S., is In structor in Music (Preparatory Piano). A Bachelor of Arts if Applied Music may be earned in this de partment, which offers the fol lowing courses of study: Voice, piano, organ, band instruments, chorus, Theory of Music, Music Form and Analysis; Elementary Composition; Counterpoint; Orch estration; History of Sacred Mu sic; Church Music Methods; His tory of Music; Conducting; In strument Classes; Instrument Boosters Club The Boosters Club is made up of students who voluntarily give their time to promote the cause of Newberry College and help se cure new students. The main proj ect of the school year is sponsor ship of a high school weekend at which time seniors from all over the state are invited to spend a weekend on the campus. Theta Sigma Eta Membership in this organization is open to all men students on the campus who are preparing for the Christian ministry or any other type of full-time Church work. The purpose of this or ganization is to foster and pro mote all activities of a religious character on the campus; to pro- .. |r- Methods and Materials; Band Ad ministration; Music Pedagogy; Music Education; Field Exper-* ience. I mote the Christian character of this college; to *provide leadership training for its members in reli gious endeavors; to prosnote Christian witnessing by word and example. Veterans Club Membership is open to all de serving veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States. The primary interest is to keep the members informed of their right* and benefits under the G.I. Bill of Rights.
