C. 1856 3a \Y1 f/555‘ u 1956 COLLEGE - GREETINGS ON ! m Your 100th Anniversary SPOHS & COMPANY Summer School A summer session is held at Newberry College each year, de signed to train students attemp ting to accelerate their courses and finish in less than four years time, and to meet the needs of teachers seeking to earn recerti fication requirements and to take in-service training courses. The summer session will be held this year from June 10 through August 2. By a slight lengthening of class hours, this eightweeks session will provide a full semes ter’s credit in each subject. Courses will be offered in Bible and Religious Education^ Com merce; Education and Psychology; Engljsh; Foreign Languages; His tory and Political Science; Soc iology; Mathematics; Natural Sciences; and Music. There will be a workshop, “Mental Health in the Classroom,’ sponsored by the S. C. Mental Health Commission and the De partment of Education in cooper ation with the college. The course is designed to provide for the teacher a greater awareness of the dynamics of human relations and how these relate to the men tal health of the pupil and tea cher in the classroom: The work shop will begin Monday, July 8 and continuing through Friday, July 26. Athletics Dept. Harvey B. Kirkland, A.B., is Di rector of Athletics and Professor of Physical Education at Newber ry College. He is also head foot ball coach. Elijah Willis Burnette, A.B., is assistant Professor of Physical Education, head baseball coach and assistant football coach. George E. Pickett, Jr., M. S., is also assistant professor of Physical Education and head basketball coach. Physical Education courses in clude Health Education; Principles and Organization of Physical Education; History and Philoso phy of Physical Education; Ma terials and Techniques in Foot ball and Basketball; Materials and Techniques in Baseball and Track; Organization of Intra murals and Techniques in Major Sports; Recreation. There is no degree awarded with a major in physical educa tion; however, it is a field of specialization for students pre paring for a degree in secondary education.
