Dr. N. H. Crowell, Ph. D., is head of the department. Dr. Estelle Hightower, Ed. D., is associate professor. A former outstanding head of this department for many years was the late beloved Dr. S. J Derrick, who also served as presi dent of the college from 1918 until 1930, resigning at that time to return to the faculty as Prof essor of History. Courses offered In this section include A Survey of Western Civ ilization; History of the United States; History of South Carolina; History of the South; History of Modern Europe; The Teaching of History; Economic History of the United States; Recent World History; Current History; Latin American History; American Gov ernment, International Relations, International Organization for World Peace; Recent Constitut ional Development; Principles of Sociology, Social Problems, and Marriage and the family. College Physician i- ■ A' * ] V- < Dr. Elbert J. Dickert College Alumni Association Is Active Group The alumni of Newberry Col lege maintain an active Associat ion. Membership includes the grad uates and former students of New berry College and of Summerland College, merged with Newberry in | 1931. The object of the Association, of which Philip T. Kelly Jr., is secretary, is to stimulate and visualize interest in the welfare of Newberry College, as well as to foster and maintain good fellow ship among its graduates and | friends. The alumni office is located in the New Classroom building dir ectly across from Holland Hall. Its personnel gather and publish information regarding the grad uates and former students and maintain an up-to-date five-way checking file. Well over 21,000 cards are recorded, including an alphabetical file, a class file, a birthday file, a geographical file and an occupation file. Active alumni chapters are fun ctioning throughout the state of South Carolina and in nearby states. The alumni office assists in the work of the local areas and helps to coordinate their various activities. The alumni office, through the Alumni As sociation, sponsors the annual Homecoming festivities, ,class re unions and other alumni activit ies. The alumni office also pub lishes “The Alumni Bulletin” four times a year. The Alumni Loyalty Fund, which is an annual giving fund, replaced the former system of fixed annual dues. This Fund was established in 1942. Its purpose is to provide an agency which shall further the practice among alumni and friends of Newberry College of giving annually in large amounts or small according to his or her ability, for the purposes of the College and thus providing a means of con solidating many gifts into one large amount which may be used for special needs of Newberry Col lege from time to time. The Association holds an annual meeting on Alumni Day preceding Commencement. The Alumni Co uncil, made up of two represent atives from each organized area, is designed in general to act in a measure as a committee of the whole for the purpose of working out plans and polices and being generally helpful in furthering the interests and regulating the act ivities of the Alumni Association.
