Before World War II, there were only three instructors in this department; now there are five, with Dr. John A. Aman, Ph.D., serving as head. Miss Ma zie Dominick and Mrs. Alva S. Dominick, A.B., teach business ad ministration courses, including typing and shorthand. Fred V. Lester, M.S.; C. Walter Summer, M.S., C.P.A. and Dr. Aman teach courses in Business Spelling and Word Study, elementary account ing, office management, business mathematics, business English, public relations for business, ac counting theory, income tax pro cedure, auditing, the teaching of bookkeeping. Other courses are secretarial science, office proced ure and practice, the teaching of shorthand and Typing; elementary economics, money and banking, business organization and man agement; principles of marketing, corporation finance, business law, Government control of business, labor problems, economic geo graphy, economic statistics, per sonnel administration, internation al economic relations, the econom ic development of South Carolina and public finance. Several types of certificates and degrees may be earned in this department, which offers a one and a two year certificate in Business Administration, general; a one and a two year Secretarial Certificate; a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commercial General; a B. S. degree in Commerce-Person nel Management; and an A. B. Degree in Commerce- During your One Hund redth Anniversary Cele bration. HELLER ROBERT YON WILLIAM HELLER BOBBY DAVENPORT Methodist Student Fellowship The MSF has been an influen tial organization on the campus for the past 11 years since its organization. Membership is com posed of all Methodist students enrolled at the college. The pri mary aim of this organization is three-fold; first, to live clean lives following the highest stand ards; second, to create a closer relationship between the Metho dist students and the Methodist church; and third,, to work hand- in-hand with the other religious organizations on the campus to promote higher standards of Christian living among the stu dents of Newberry College. Student Government Student government was inaug urated at Newberry College dur ing the administration of Dr. James C. Kinard- The object of this organization is to promote the mutual welfare of the college and of the student body. Tom Corea serves as student body president. Class presidents are Tyler Dufford, senio class; Terry Dukes, junior class; Julius Tant, sophomore class. Milly Goddard is chairman of the Women’s Stu dent Council; Dennis Smith is chairman of the Men’s Student Council. Blue Key Blue Key is a national honor fraternity. The Newberry College Chapter was organized in the spring of 1951. Leadership, schol arship, and character are the fun damentals on which members are accepted. The purpose of Blue Key is manifold: To perpetuate and intensify the belief in God, support the government of the United States, preserve the prin ciples of good citizenship, foster an ambition for intellectual at tainment, and aid in any way pos sible the enrichment of student life and the progress of the col lege. Student Christian Association The purpose of S-C.A. is to stimulate religious life on the campus. The functions of SCA are varied. In addition to the regular meetings, the organization offers socials, retreats. Religious Em phasis week and special programs on Thanksgiving, Christinas and Easter. Other SCA sponsored ac tivities include vespers nightly in Smeltzer Hall, chapel programs every Tuesday, grace at meals in the dining hall, and Sunday ev ening vespers. SCA strives to of fer every student a well rounded religious program. Gamma Sigma Gamma Sigma is a collegiate honor society in psychology. Its purpose is to promote the study of psychology and to stimulate friendship among its members. COMMENTS ON MEN AND THINGS By SPECTATOR The President’s budget can be sharply reduced. With a carry over of seventy billions why cannot five billions be cut from this new budget of seventy two billions ? “President Eisenhower clashed sharply with Democratic and Republican Congressional demands for drastic budget cuts. In his strongest and clearest words yet on the economy drive, the President told his press conference 'it’s futile’ to think the U. S. can maintain its foreign and domestic pro grams and cut the budget severely. Mr. Eisenhower specifically rejected proposals by Sen. Byrd (D, Va.) for more than $5 billion of spending cuts. His arguments, which he termed ‘a little speech’ also struck back at Congressional demands for budget cutting in gener al. Only Tuesday, House Republicans unanimously adopted a resolution calling for a ‘sharp reduction’ in spending. The G.O.P. Representatives also went on record in favor of tax relief ‘as soon as practicable.’ The President said he was also sure the ‘people want a! tax cut as soon as it can be done.’ But, he added, I am certain also of this: That the American people also know* what kind of standards they want in national security, the safety of their country, in the amounts invested for peace, and in the amounts invested for, you might say, raising or meeting the human requirements of our own people at home.* The Chief Executive conceded that ‘you can save some money here and there,’ but argued much more strongly than before that the programs provided in the budget can not be seriously cut. In his earlier discussions of the econ omy drive, Mr. Eisenhower has taken the position that Congress authorizes all such programs, and Congress can decide to discontinue whatever it chooses.
