Religious Education is headed by
Dr. R. A. Goodman, D.D., who has
served the College since 1921.
Also in this department are Dr.
Paul H. ‘Heisey, Ph.D., associate
professor, and Rev. J. Benjamin
Bedenbaugh, B.D., assistant pro
fessor.
This department teaches stud
ies in the Old Testament; Studies
in the New Testament; An Intro
duction to Religious Education;
Principles of Religious Education;
Modern Methods in Sunday School
Work; The Organization and
Work of the United Lutheran
Church in America; Organization
and Administration, of Religious
Education; The Curriculum of
Moral and Religious Education;
Teachings and Applications of
Christian Religion.
Through the Department of
Bible and allied departments, New
berry College trains young men
and young women for vocational
and avocational service to the
Church. Among the opportuni
ties for service are the following:
Directors of Religious Education
in local churches; community
leaders; teachers in week-day
schools of religion, teachers for
leadership training schools.
General Church Work: Pastors’
assistants, church Secretaries, pre
deaconess training, and parish
work.
Missionary Service: Preparatory
training for home, foreign and
social mission service.
A two-year certificate course
in the training of church secre
taries is offered, as well as eith
er B.S. or A.B. degrees with ma
jor in Bible and Religious Educa
tion.
Also included in this department
are courses in General Ethics,
Applied Ethics and An Introduc
tion to Philosophy.
Future Teachers
Association
The FTA is a new organization
on the campus. Membership is
open to all those planning to en
ter the teaching profession. The
FTA will hold its meetings month
ly. The chief aims of this organi
zation are: to interest the best
young men and women in educa
tion as a lifelong career; to en
courage careful selection of per
sons admitted to schools which
prepare teachers, with emphasis
on both character and scholar
ship; to seek through dissemina
tion of information and through
high standards of preparation to
bring teacher supply and demand
into a reasonable balance.
