China lasted for 15 days, beginning
on the First Day of the First Moon
and -Umirriny on “Teng Chieh,”
the Feast of Lanterns.

world and from New Year’s Day
until “Teng Chieh’’ exchanges of

Northern China usually cele
brated very simply, with paper
lanterns hung in doors and win
dows. In Southern China, however,
the festivities were usually con
cluded with spectacular lantern-lit
parades featuring huge fire-breath
ing dragons supported from within
by many men.
EARLY ‘OPEN HOUSE’
“Open House’’ on New Year’s
day was quite the vogue in the
United States around the turn of
the aoth Century. Newspapers car
ried columns of ‘at home’ notices
announcing the hours during which
visitors would be received. And
having duly received, hosts and
hostesses closed their receptions

at other ’open houses.'

New Year’s day is primarily a
festive occasion, but recorded in
the pages of history are many im
portant events which have taken
place on the first day of various
years.
On January 1, 1778, the First
Union flag of 13 sripes was unfurled
by George Washington. On Jan
uary 1, 1863, the Emancipation of
Negro slaves became effective by
proclamation of President Abra
ham Lincoln.
Here are some other events
which occurred on New Year’s
day:
1735—Paul Revere was bom.

1792—Kentucky admitted to the
Union.

1801—Union of Ireland with Brit
ain.

1815 — General Jackson repelled
British when they attacked New
Orleans.

edged independence of South Amer

1919—New Year’s day declared
a legal holiday throughout the
country except in Massachusetts
and Washington, D.C.

future year when maturity will
bring the deeper significance of
this great holiday.
Bethlehem Basilica
Among Oldest Churches
The Basilica of the Nativity at
Bethlehem, constructed more than
1,620 years ago, is one of the oldest
churches in Christendom.
As it stands today it represents
the original building as erected by
Emperor Constantine and restora
tions and additions made under
Justinian.
It is surrounded by three con
vents of separate faiths, Greek,
Latin and Armenian. All three
have the privilege of worshiping in
the Grotto of the Nativity.
CHRISTMAS TREES
Tradition has it that Christmas
trees were first used in Germany
when Christian missionaries chop
ped down trees worshiped by the
pagans and made a decorated tree
part of the Christian celebration.
Earliest records of the use of
Christmas trees v in the United
States indicate that German im
migrants, who wanted to preserve
the type of Christmas they had in
Germany, were responsible for
popularizing the use of trees in
this country.
Simple Christmas
Best for Children
Crowds of faces glowing with the
Christmas spirit, Santa with his
laughing «7*s and hearty chuckle,
gifts you can use and tome you
can’t—that** a grownup*s-eye-view
of the holidays.
A forest of legs, a frustrating
heap ef things to touch and see
and tax endless journey of being
pushed and pulled through a hot,
noisy place—that’s a child’s-eye-
view ef the holidays. '
If you gfve children a happier
view ef the holidays they’ll give
you a baggier one too.
First of all, avoid crowds with
your children. If they shop with
you, ife best to take them imme
diately after a rest and not stay
too long.
Preschool children often don’t
understand Santa Claus. Take
them to see him if they want to go.
Forcing them to sit on his lap
often makes them cry and leaves
unpleasant memories because they
were frightened.
Children often receive so many
gifts that they’re confused and
can’t decide which one to play
with first. After they open the
gifts, put some away for a rainy
day. See which they’d like to save
for later.
The holiday season will pe a
pleasant time for your children if
you keep It simple.
