The same mistletoe which
makes boys bold and girls blush
at Christmastide had other mean
ings in other times.
Mistletoe, as one story goes,
i once was a full grown tree. Then
its timber was cut for the cross
on which Christ was crucified.
Since then, it has retrogressed
to its present state as a parasite,
a plant which grows on other
trees. «•
Ancient Druids worshipped mis
tletoe because it grew on their
sacred oak. At the end of every
year a Druid priest would cut
down the mistletoe with a golden
sickle, and not one twig was al
lowed to touch the earth. Later
sprigs of mistletoe were often
fastened over doorways to ward
off evil spirits.
In Colonial days mistletoe was
high and the lad who stole a kiss
had to reach up and pull off one
berry for every kiss. His kisses
stopped when the berries were
gone.

Many After-Holiday

There are a number of uses to
which you can put your Christmas
tree after it has served its purpose
In the home.
You can cut off the longer
branches and “plant” them as
Windbreaks to protect outdoor
plantings such as low-growing box
wood, azalea, yew, rhododendron
and juniper. Little teepees can be
built around exposed shrubs and
tender plants. This will protect
them from biting, drying winds
and prevent fcnow and ice from
accumulating and bending the
plants out of shape.

Is exposed will prevent heaving of
soils during alternate freezing and
thawing. Heaving may force bulbs
and roots of perennials from the
ground.
The entire tree may be used as
a bird feeder in thl back y a reft It
may be either anchored securely
or fastened to a fence. Pieces of
suet tied to its branches and a con
tainer of water nearby will provide
a constant supply of food for your

Sending Cards Is
Old Holiday Tradition
The custom of ^sending Christ
mas cards has grown so popular
through the years that each year
an average of one and one-half bil
lion cards are mailed.
Some historians suggest that the
idea of sending Christmas cards
originated with school boys away
from home, who wrote their letters
on fancy paper and in fancy writ
ing.
William Egley sent out a Christ
mas greeting on a fancy card in
1842 which showed his artistic and
engraving talent. The card carried
the message, “A Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year.”
In 1846, Henry Cole, a middle
class Englishman, sent Christ
mas cards which depicted a Vic
torian family gathered at the fes
tive board and which carried the
message “A Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year to You.”
The cards brought fame and pop
ularity to Henry Cole, but it was
two decades before Christmas
cards were sold generally.
TOYS FOR REAL . . . Toys
for 1956 are realistic as shown
in this electric sports car and
hobby-horse bike. Manufactur
ers this year are concentrating
on toys that will appeal to the
whole family.
Exercise Care in
Outdoor Decorations
If you light an outdoor tree, do it
with care and caution.
Spruce, firs and pines, when not
too large, are ideal for outdoor
Yuletide display, but hemlock,
yew, boxwood and aborvitae are a
little more sensitive to the heat of
Christmas lights and their needles
may be scorched if caution is not
used.
Outdoor lights should always be
placed so they do not touch nee
dles. Bulbs of 15 wattage are suf
ficient. Use only weatherproof elec
trical fixtures designed for outdoor
use. Check the position of the
lights each day and turn them on
only at eventide. Be sure to turn
them out before retiring.
