American Motors Unveils 1957 Ramblers

The 1957 Rambler, which continues its reputation for
compactness and economy, will be available in both a
V-8 and "six” series when the line goes on sale October
25 at Nash and Hudson dealerships. The new V-8
develops 190 horsepower, while the economy-champion
six-cylinder engine has been boosted to 125 horsepower.
An optional dual-throat carburetor on the ’'six’* in
creases the horsepower to 135. Shown is the Rambler
Custom Cross Country hardtop station wagon. Twelve
other models are available in the Rambler line for 1957.

to fill out the line of Ramblers,
which has become the basic vol
ume car of American Motors
Corporation.
“We are confident that the V-8
engine, plus the new styling, will
further boost the popularity of
the Rambler, which has made
great strides in the past two
years,” said Roy Abernathy, vice-
president of distribution and

The V-8 engine, which uses reg
ular grade gasoline, develops 190
horsepower to give the Rambler
one of the highest power-to-
weight ratios in the automobile
industry.
“The new engine is designed to
give excellent economy, high per
formance, exceptionally long life
and minimum maintenance,” Ab
ernathy said. “It is the type of
V-8 engine best suited to the
Rambler, which long has been
known as the economy champ
ion.”

Thirteen models are in the 1957
line, six of which are V-8s. A1
are on a 108-inch wheelbase. The
V-8 models are the Custom hard
top station wagon and hardtop
sedan. Custom and Super station
wagons and sedans. The “six”
ries includes the Custom and Su-«
per station wagon; Custom, Super
and Deluxe sedan, and a Super

The chrome molding at the top of
the panel is straight, while the
lower molding sweeps down to the
front of the- rear fender, comes to
a modified V^and then runs back
to the tail-light housing.
Fifteen cplqrs, 11 of which are
new, are offered for 1957 Ramb
lers. Four of the new colors -are
metallics. They are plum, avocado,
cinnamon bronze and gotham
gray.
Interiors are keyed to harmon
ize with exterior colors. The in
strument panel, steering column
and wheel and all interior finish
moldings are colored metallic
green, metallic blue or satin
black depending on the basic in
terior color.
To enhance the inherent safety
of American Motors’ exclusive
unitized construction, in which
the body and frame members are
fused into one integral unit with
9,000 welds, a safety package of
padded instrument panel and pad
ded sun visors is offered. Safety
belts are also available. Safety
door locks, which help prevent
the doors from popping open in
the event of a collision, continue to
be standard equipment.
Airliner reclining seats and
twin travel beds continue to be of
fered on all Ramblers.
The V-8 can be obtained with
either a standard transmission,
automatic overdrive or the
smooth-shifting Flashaway Hyd-
ra-Matic.
Three type of transmissions are
available on the “six.” They are
standard synchomesh, optional
overdrive and optional Hydra-Ma-
tic.
Wheel rims of the new Rambler
have been widened a half inch,
and wider tires, 6.70 by 15, have
been added on V-8 models. The
new tire size is optional on six-
cylinder models.
Ramblers equipped with auto
matic transmissions have Selecto-
Lift starting. The starter is acti
vated merely by lifting the shift
lever.
Steering is even easier on the
new Rambler because of a new
steering gear box.

designed to reduce sway .when

The station wagon, the most
popular model in the Rambler
line, continues to have a roll dcl/n
rear window, which eliminates the
inconvenience of lifting the upper
section of the loading gate.
In addition to its full-sized in
teriors, the Rabler has greater
than average luggage space. The
four-door sedan has a trunk ca
pacity of more than 22 /cubic
feet, while the station wagon has
a cargo capacity of 80 cubic feet.

Board instructed that letters be

tion must be observed in all in
stances.
