RAINY DAY MARRIAGE

T HE marriage vows were to be
solemnized the following week.
Walter Lawton, son and heir of J
Burke Lawton, millionaire, was the
bridegroom. Lucy Johnson, daugh
ter of Peter Johnson, day laborer
would be the bride.
Lucy had been a waitress in an
ordinary cafe. One rainy afternoon,
entering more for shelter than any
thing else, Walter sat at the counter
and ordered a cup of coffee. Lucy
served him. First he noticed her
hands, glancing up he was gazing
into an extra pretty face.
Walter was considered a wonder
ful catch for any girl in his set. But
somehow he never became inter
ested hi any one of them. They
showered him with attentions to no
avail.
He had resigned himself to bach
elorhood, that is, until the day he
met Lucy. He didn’t know her from
Adam, but she recognized him, she
had served at a banquet he at
tended.
Nothing new had been attached
to their courtship; wealthy men had
married women of moderate means
before, and vice versa.
As the wedding day drew near
Walter had thoughts; could be pos
sible that Lucy was marrying him
only for the sake of the luxuries he
could bestow upon her; would she
fHTi be willing to marry him should
he be penniless? Why not settle the
question? He and Lucy had planned
to drive into the country that after
noon. He could pretend that his
father unwisedly had made wrong
investments and had lost every
thing, and, he, Walter is now com
pelled to seek common labor for a
livelihood. It would enable him to
get her reaction and afford him the
opportunity of learning if she loved
him for himself alone.
Parked in their favorite spot, and
after a few preliminaries, Walter
broached the subject.
“Lucy,” he said. “Have you ever
given thought as to how the major
ity of people live?’’
“Yes, I have,” replied Lucy. “For
instance; there’s Eloise McSwain,
she of your set, I have often won
dered how she has managed to live
as long as she has, the gait she trav
els would throw Swaps speed into
slow motion.”

needy, going along day after day
with no hope of the future.”
“Why bring up a depressing sub
ject on such a beautiful afternoon.
“The depressing subject concerns
you and L Lucy,” he replied, an in
ner perception troubling him. He
felt that he was taking an unfair
advantage in his pretense. After
ward, when she had accepted his
narrative as a fact and then In
formed him that her love was real
ly true, even if he was as poor as
Job’s turkey, stoo would always
love him, how then could he ex
plain his infamous procedure.
“What is the subject, Walter?”
“Er—ah—yes,” the way was dif
ficult. “Lucy, would you marry a
poor man?”
“If I loved him, I would, surely.”
“If suddenly I became that poor
man, would you still be willing?”
“Well,” there was merriment in
her voice. “You would do until an
other poor one came along.”
No need continuing, she had giv
en him the answer he was seek
ing; she loved him for himself
alone.
Late that evening he walked into
the family room. His father was
there, hollow-eyed, haggard, wor
ried lines written boldly on his face.
He decided then and there; when
he came into his fortune he wouldn’t
allow ft to frustrate him. Thinking
to bring cheer, he slapped his father
on the back and heartily announced:
“Father, Pm a very happy man.
Lucy has informed me that she
would become my wife, even if I
didn’t have wealthy parents.”
“Then,” said his father. “The
privilege is all hers. Son, I have
been wiped out, everything lost,
even to our home. We are penni
less.”
What wonderful news for Lucy,
Walter could now go into business
with her father.

Cereal Apples-on-a-Stick
Big, ripe apples dipped in syrup and covered generously with
honey-flavored wheat cereal make intriguing, tasty place-cards for
a children’s party. Place a wooden skewer in each apple. Then
stand the stick in a small flower frog holder. Tie a ribbon
bow on the stick and place a name card in the frog holder*for a
gala double-duty party favor. ^
CEREAL APPLES
v 6 medium sized apples 1 cup maple-blended syrup
6 wooden skewers 1 cup sugar
4 cups honey flavored Wheat sereal
Wash and dry apples. Insert wooden skewer in each app T e. Put
cereal in large bowl. Mix syrup and sugar in small deep saucepan.
Stir over heat until sugar is dissolved. Cook, without stirring, until
candy thermometer registers 270° F. or small amount of mixture
dropped in cold water forms a hard ball. Meanwhile, put cereal
in large bowl. Dip apples quickly in hot syrup, twirling to coat
apples completely. Roll at once in cereal. Cool. Makes 6 cereal
candy apples.
