RECIPROCITY
V
One day a disciple of Confucius
asked himself if there was any one
word upon which toe whole of life
might proceed. And the great Chi
nese sage said: "Is not reciprocity
toe word? What you do not desire,
do not place before others.’* Thud,
500 years before Christ was born
in Bethlehem, Confucius gave men
a partial golden rule. It was in a
negative form. Jesus bade men do
unto others as they would that men
should do unto them.
While the Golden Rule given by
Jesus is a direct command, it is an
infallible statement of the condi
tions of human life. Men do re
ceive as they give. A man’s deeds,
we have often heard, return upon
his own head. “Curses, like fowls,
fly home to roost” And thfy al
ways, according to Mr. Emerson,
“return upon the head of him who
imprecates them.”
Construed as a statement of re
ward, toe Golden Rule shows that
toe good a man does comes back
with ample blessing upon himself
«nd brings to him something of toe
joy and happiness he gives unto
others. On the other hand, esfil
will return upon a man who is the
doer at it and bring him into the
same misery he inflicts upon oth
ers. Choose the good in life for
yourself by bringing good unto
others.
