Newberry Men In Service At
Stations Around The World
Army Pvt. George S. Bates,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Esco Bates,
Prosperity, recently completed
an annual field training test in
Germany with the 2nd Armored
Division.
The test included firing of the
105 mm. howitzer, the .30 and .50
caliber macrine guns and small
arms.
Assigned to Battery B of the
division's 14th Field Artillery
Battalion, Bates entered the
Army in June 1955. He completed
basic training at Fort Chaffee,
Ark., and arrived in Europe last
December.
The Navy Department announc
ed the promotion recently of
Claude G. Hester, son of Mr. and
Mirs. Claude Hester of 612 Wright
street,' Newberry, to ship's ser
viceman third class, USN, while
serving aboard the Pacific Fleet
heavy cruiser USS Bremerton.
The promotion followed suc
cessful completion of a Navy
wide petty officet examination
conducted in February.

Oglethorpe is Chevis I. Boozer,
Jr., seaman, USN, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Chevis I. Boozer of Route 1,

Before entering the service in
August, 1955, he graduated from
Newberry High School.
Corpsmen perform medical as
signments such as nursing, first
aid, ward and operating room du
ties and the maintenance of medi
cal records.
Many of the corpsmen become
technicians in specialized fields
of x-ray, clinical laboratory, phar
macy, epidemiology, sanitation
and fever therapy. Some serve in
dependently on small ships.

Has Monthly Meet

Church held its regular meeting
on Monday, July 16 in the McCul
lough Bible classroom with the
president, Mrs. T. P. Crooks, pre
siding. Mrs. Forrest Lominack
conducted devotions.
Mrs. W. H. Tedford, vice-presi
dent, in bringing World Federa
tion before the Society, read an
article on a recent visit made to
mission fields in southeast Asia,
telling of the eagerness, loyalty
and devotion exhibited among na
tives, teachers and missionaries
in their churches and schools
there.
During the business session, it
was decided to send a representa
tive to the School of Missions to
be held at Columbia College Aug
ust 13-17. The society then gave
some time to the discussion of
plans to place new rugs in the
parsonage, after which the meet
ing was adjourned with prayer. '

CHARLOTTE, July 17. — The
Kendall Company plans to shut
down spinning and weaving op
erations at its Thrift Plant in
Paw Creek, N. C., by mid-Octo
ber in preparation for sale or li
quidation of the plant, H. K.
Hallett, vice president, disclosed
today..
The company’s cotton accept
ance department, now at the
Thrift Mill, win be moved to
Newberry where it will be hous
ed with the Cotton Acceptance
Office.
Mr. Hallett attributed the ac
tion to the changing demand for
fabrics needed in the integrated
operations of the company, and
the inability of the plant to meet

stressed that the factors leading
to this decision were not specifi
cally related to the currently
very competitive conditions ex
isting in the textile industry, but
were more fundamental and
longer range.
Mr. Hallett said the decision
had been'reached only after pro
tracted studies had shown that
continued operation of the plant
by the company would be uneco
nomical. He added that before
making any statement to em
ployes and the public the com
pany had hoped to announce the
sale, of the plant to a purchaser
who would continue textile op
erations with the prospect of
maintaining employment for the
Thrift Plant personnel. The com
pany will continue to explore this
possibility, but if this is not feas
ible the properties will be sold for
other purposes. If the plant is li
quidated, he concluded, the com
pany plans to work out a separa
tion pay plan for the empployees.
The Thrift Plant employs 820
people and has been operating
34,000 spindles and 700 looms.
The Kendall Company acquired
the mill in 1924, making the third
Kendall Cotton Mill.
The Kendall Company operates
eight textile mills, located in
North Carolina, South Carolina,
and Alabama.
