County Cancer
Goal Is $4000
COLUMBIA, Mar. 9.—Represen
tatives from the Newberry County
Cancer Unit met here today for
the annual meeting of area work
ers from Central South Carolina.
State Crusade Director William
N. Cork told the cancer leaders
how South Carolina will raise its
goal of $250,000. Each county has
been given a goal to raise in the
April Crusade against cancer..
The fact that South Carolina
lost 2,097 persons from cancer in
1954 points up the fact that a
more intensified cancer program
of education and research is a
necessity, Gen. Cork said.
Newberry County lost 54 per
sons from cancer last year. In
1954 there were 27 cancer deaths
in this county, showing an in
crease in one year of 27, or twice
the number lost in 1954. Under
the Crusade leadership of Mrs.
Nat Welch Newberry County last
year raised $2,858.05.
This year Newberry has a goal
of $4,000 toward the state goal ol
$250,000.
