tended the capping exercises of
the freshman class of the York
county hospital School of Nursing
at Rock Hill, and the reception
which followed. Misses Lauris and
Doris Riley received their caps.
They are the first twins to take
training at the York hospital and
are making an enviable record
there.
Rites For Wreck
Victims Held
Funeral services for Mrs. Lalla
Tompkins Thornton, automobile
accident victim were held Tues
day at 3:30 at the McSw-ain Fun
eral home in Newberry, with the
Rev. John W. Robinson, the Rev.
J. W. Davenport and the Rev. Dan
Norris, officiating.
Mrs. Thornton died late Sunday
afternoon at the Memorial hospi
tal from injuries received In a 3-
car accident on Highway 76 near
Newberry.
Born in Saluda county, Mrs.
Thornton was reared in Newberry
and had lived in Greenville for
the past 12 years.
She was the daughter of the late
S. B. and Ella Moss Tompkins
and was a member of St. Paul’s
Methodist church here.
Surviving are her husband, Div-
id T. Thornton; two brothers,
Pope S. Tompkins of Newberry,
and Gus N. Tompkins of Green
ville.
David T. Thornton, 55. of 108,
Park street, Greenville, died Tues
day night at Newberry County
Memorial hospital from injuries
received Sunday morning in a 3
automobile accident on Highway
76 near Newberry.
Mr. Thornton was born and rear
ed in Newberry, a son of the late
J. R. and Martha Davis Thornton.
For the past 12 years he had
made his home in Greenville
where he was connected with the
Thornton Tire Service. He at
tended Newberry schools and was
a graduate of Newberry College,
where he was a member of the
varsity football team and was a
former member of the Newberry
Lions club. He was a member of
St. Paul’s Methodist Church in
Greenville. He was a veteran of
World War I.
Surviving are two brothers, W
B. Thornton and J. Andy Thorn
ton of Greenville; one sister, MTre.
C. B. (Geneva Thornton) Bicl^er-
staff of Newberry and one uncle,
Ben E. Thornton of Columbia.
Funeral services will be con
ducted at 3:30 p. m. today (Thurs
day) at McSwaih Funeral home
by the Rev. John W. Robison, as
sisted by the Rev. J. W. Daven
port and the Rev. M. M. Brooks.
Burial will be in Rosemont Ceme
tery.
