who are on furlough from their
missionary work in Ethiopia, wlil

Friday night, October 28 at 7:30
p. m. to speak and show slides of
their work in Ethiopia.
The jones’ are from Montreal,
Canada and served with the Su
dan Interior Mission.

were enroute to Roland, N. C. to

Mrs. Longshore
Mrs. Maude C. McWhirter Long
shore, 51, wife of James Clarence
Longshore of Columbia, formerly
of Newberry, died Tuesday night
at the Baptist hospital in Colum
bia.
Mrs. Longshore was born in
Newberry, the daughter of the late
Callie J. and Amelia Vaughn Mc
Whirter. She lived in Newberry
until moving to Columbia in IMl.
She was a member of Central
Methodist Church, Newberry.
Besides her husband, she is sur
vived by her step-mother, Mrs.
Carrie B. McWhirter of Newberry;
two sons, Carl E. and Roy J. Long
shore, both of Columbia; one
brother, Richard McWhirter, and
one sister, Mrs. Eula Senn Berry,
both of Newberry; two grandchil
dren; an aunt, Mrs. Mattie Ale-
wine, and an uncle, Jordan
Vaughn, both of Newberry.
Funeral services were conducted
Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock
from the Whitaker Funeral Home
by the Rev. J. W. Davenport and
the Rev. Joseph Derrick. Burial
followed in Rosemont cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Fred
Rodelsperger, George Rodelsper-
ger, A. P. Morris, Lomas Morris,
Ralph Vaughn, Leo Hendrix, and
Cliff Sanders.
Serving as honorary pallbearers
were John Clarkson, Wilson
Brown, Sam Beam, Tom Fellers,
J. V. Clamp, C. T. Summer, Fred
Koosa, Hugh Griffin, G. V. Oreech,

First Lieutenant
George B. Brockenbrough, 24,
•on of George H. Brockenbrough,
Kinarde, was recently .promoted
to first lieutenant at Aberdeen
Proving Ground, Md„ where he
ia an Instructor with the Army’s
Ordinance School. Lt. Brocken-'
brough was graduated from
Clemeon College just prior to
entering the Army in February
1954.
David Reeder Pitts
Rites Friday
David Reeder Pitts, 77, died
early Thursday morning at his
residence in the Burton section of
Newberry County. He had been ill
for the past year.
Mr, Pitts was born and reared
in Newberry County, a son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pitts. He
spent most of his life in the Bur
ton section where he operated a
farm. He was a member of Trin-

Kibler Dies After

Long- Dlness
Will L. Kibler, 82, of the St.
Phillips section ot Newberry Coun
ty, died early Tuesday morning
at the residence of his daughter,
Mrs. D. L. Driggers on Caldwell
street. He had been ill for several
years.
Mr. Kibler was horn and reared
in the St. Phillips section, a son of
the late, Adam and Laura Eargle
Kibler. He was a farmer and a
member of St. Phillips Lutheran
Church, where he was a former
member of the Church Council and
a member of the Church Brother
hood, He married the former Miss
Mary Louvinia Ruff, who died
three years ago.
He Is survived by two sons, W.
D. Kibler, Newberry and L. Earl
Kibler, Greenville; seven daugh
ters, Mrs. John A. Stone, Mrs.
Paul Stone, Mrs. Legrande Liv
ingston, Mrs. Louie Metts, Mrs
Heyward Mills, Mrs. D. L. Drig
gers, and Mrs. C. C. Werts; one
sister, Mrs. Lilia Shealy, of White
Rock; two brothers, Dave Kibler,
Gilmer, Tex., and J. J. Kibler,
Morvew, N. O.; 14 grandchil
dren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted
at 5:39 p. m. Wednesday at St.
Phillips Lutheran Church by the
Rev. C. L. Richardson.
League Anniversary
Banquet Is Tonight
Two hundred persons are ex
pected to gather tonight at the
Newberry Community Hall to ^ielp
the members of the Civic League
of Newberry celebrate the 50th
Anniversary of the organisation
with a Golden Anniversary Ban
quet.
Dr. James C. Kinard will deliv
er the main address of the eve
ning, and greetings will be brought
by other prominent persons includ
ing Senator Strom Thurmond,
Congressman Bryan Dorn, Sena
tor Marvin Abrams and Mayor
James E. Wiseman.
A ceremonial cutting of the An
niversary cake will be held, with
Dr. Mamie Summer, president of
the League cutting the cake and
Mrs. R. D. Wright, only charter
member of the League who is still
a member, * receiving the first
slice.
Services Today For
Eugene C. Folk
died late Tuesday afternoon at the
Newberry County Memorial Hos
pital after a short illness. Mr.
Folk was a native of Newberry
County, and was a son of the late
Hayne H. and Catherine Buz-
hardt Folk.
He was a member of the Beth
Eden Lutheran Church, an honor
ary member of the church council,
and a trustee of Beth Eden Long
Lane School.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
lone Caldwell Folk: four sons, Mil-
ton C., Eugene C. Jr., and J. Eld-
ward Folk, all of Newberry, and
James H! Folk of Charleston; one
sister, Mrs. Julia Crapps of New
berry and Columbia, and two
granddaughters.
Funeral services will. be con
ducted today (Thursday) at 3 p. m.
at McSwain Funeral Home by
the Rev. Thomas Weeks and Dr. R.
A. Goodman.

who survives.
Besides his wife, he is survived
by seven sons: Hugh Pitts, New
berry, Herman, Willian, John,
Milton, Jesse Pitts, all of Silver-
street, and Floyd Pitts of Spartan
burg; three daughters, Mrs. An
nie Davenport Bundrick, Mrs. Eva
Johnston, and Mrs. Veda Dorroh,
all of Silverstreet; . one brother,
Jim Pitts of Newberry; 43 grand
children and 28 great grandchil
dren and a number of nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were conducted
at 2:30 Friday afternoon from
Trinity Methodist Church by the
Rev. Philo Jones, and the Rev. R
M. Dubose. Interment was in the
church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were James
Reeder Pitts, Alf Dorroh, J. W.
Pitts, Joe Pitts, Herman John
ston, and Marion Pitts.
Honorary escort was composed
of the Board of Stewards of Trin
ity Methodist Church.

Prosperity 4-H
October Meeting
The Prosperity Senior 4-H club
held their monthly meeting on
October 14. The meeting was
called to order by the president,
Martha Brown. Devotions were
conducted by Patsy Livingston,
after which the 4-H pledge and
Flag salute were led by the presi
dent.
A poem was given by Kay New
man. The meeting was turned
over to Mrs. Oolem&n, who show
ed a film on “How to Stretch
Your Food Dollar.’* The roll was
called and minutes of the last
meeting read by the secretary. It
was suggested that refreshments
be served at future meetings. A
committee was appointed to make
the necessary arrangements. Mem
bers of the committee are Jo Ann
Kunkle, Kay Newman, Brenda
Denris and Reba Adams. The
nueeting was adjourned.

Little Scott Edward Vance who
is six weeks old on Thursday of
this week, was the principal per
son in a solemn and happy event
that took place at three o’clock
Sunday afternoon at the Saint
Francis of Assissi Catholic church
here In Fillmore. His parents,. Mr.
and Mrs. Richard Vance chose
Mrs. George Scoles of Fillmore
and Miss Kay Fitzpatrick of Los
Angeles as God-mother and God
father for their son. Father Jos
eph F. Alker, pastor of the church
performed the baptismal service.
Present for the ritual was Miss
Virginia Okell of Los Angeles who
came up with Miss Fitzpatrick es
pecially for the event. Both young
ladles are very dear friends of
the family.
