Although not in competition with other exhibits, a special 1 award was presented for the attractive display. The Junior club is sponsored by the Garden Study Club of Newberry. Hfs professional ability and wil- ingness to assume responsibilities earned him the respect of all those with whom he served. The mer itorious service rendered reflects great credit upon himself." Redskins Out To Scalp Elon The Newberry Indians have dealt upsets to two of the strong est teams in the state, Furman and Wofford- The Indians’ offen sive machine under the direction of quarterback Danny Brabham has out-rushed all opponents this season. - The Indians have rushed for a j total of 1025 yards. Teriffic line j play by Marion Lee, Olin McCurry, Eddie Jones, Ralph Voyles, and Center Steve* Robertson, combined with the work of the end* Ed Blanko and Harold Green, have held all opponents to a grand to tal of rushing to 347 yards. Brabham has completed 15 of 28 passes for a total of 212 yards. Opponents have passed for a total of 267 yards. McSWAIN Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson (Bil ly) McSwain of 1214 Walnut street announce the birth of a six pound, 15 ounce son, John Jackson, Jr., on October 5th at the Newberry Hospital. WICKER Mr. and Mrs. Walter Jake Wick er, Newberry Route 2, are parents of a seven pound son, Joe Robert, born October 7th at the Newberry Hospital. BOLAND Mr. and Mrs. John Daniel Bo land of Little Mountain are par ents of a six pound, six ounce I son, Efird Calhoun born October 7th at the local hospital. HUGHES Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hughes of route 4 announce the birth of a son, Michael Dewey, who arrived at the local hospital October 8th. FULMER Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fulmer of route 4 are parents of a sevens pound, four ounce son born Octo ber 11 at the Newberry Memorial Hospital. GRADDICK A seven pound girl -was born tc Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Graddick of Fire Prevention Is Emphasized By Chief Beam By proclamation of the presi dent, the week of October 9-15 has been designated Fire Preven tion week. Local service clubs and organizations are taking part in the campaign to prevent costly fires in this community. Also coopesRttng, according to Fire Chief Sam Beam, are the schools. Fire drills are being held in all schools in the city this week, and Chief Beam stated that the teachers are- doing a fine Job pf training children on drills. The chief inspected all schools, hotel® and the hospital last week togeth er with Jesse Johnson, State Fire Marshal, of Columbia. Of the 56 fire alarms received by 'the local fire fighters thin year, all were small fires, said the chief, seven being cut of town calls. He emphasized that good fire protection, as \ well as fir® prevention, and efficient handling of fires helps keep fire insurano® rates low.
