County Breeders
Hear Hylton
The Newberry county Beef Cab-
tie Breeders Association held a
supper meeting at the Wallace
home Wednesday night. May 25.
Jesse Hylton, Cattle Buyer from
Blackville, Virginia, was guest
speaker. Mr. Hylton buys cattle
regularly on the Columbia and
Earhardt markets during the late
winter and spring months. He
also does some farm buying when
he can find them in large lots. Mr.
Hylton stated that he likes to buy
South Carolina cattle but suggest
ed that many of our producers
should improve the quality of the
cattle they breed for the fetter
and slaughter market.
He also* stated that he avoids
buying horned cattle and suggest
ed that our breeders dehorn calves
while they are young.
L. F. Cato, Clemson Extension
Specialist, talked briefly about
the plans for (feeder cattle this
fall. He pointed out that a new
rule requires that all cattle en
tered in these special sales must
be dehorned. Mr. Cato also sug
gests that male calves be castrat
ed while young to keep them from
showing stagginess when they are
sold as feeders.
During the brief business sess
ion, the following officers for
the new year were elected': C. T.
Smith, president; J. E. Sease, V,
president; and W. A. Ridgeway,
secretary and treasurer.
Any beef cattle breeder, who
will have beef type steers or heif
ers for sale this fall, may contact
the county agent’s office for In
formation about the special Fall
Feeder Cattle Sales.
