Newberrians Brother
Succumbs Sunday
^ Sidney J. Mayer, 75, of 602 Pet-
tigu St., Greenville, died at a
Greenville hospital at 2:45 p.m.
Sunday afternoon from injuries
suffered in an automobile acident
at Washington Ave., and the Eas
ley Bridge Rd. Friday morning.
Mr. Mayer was a son of the late
Henry M. and Laura (Dominick)
Mayer and wa^ born in Lexington
County. He haa made his home in
Greenville for 22 years. For a
number of years he was associated
with the Life &Casualty'Insurance
Co., and before his retirement two
years ago he was with the Pal
metto Life Insurance Co.
Mr. Mayer was a member of
Trinity Lutheran Church and was
teacher of the men’s Bible class
of the church and took an active
part in the other phases of the
dhurch work.
He is survived by his wife, Mary
Louise Wessinger Mayer, and one
son, James P. Mayer, both of
Greenville; three sisters, Mrs. John
Shealy and Miss Aurelia Mayer,
Newberry, and Mrs. John Monts,
Silverstreet; three brothers, O. L.
Mayer and A. M. Mayer, Newberry,
and J. M. Mayer, Atlanta, and one
grandson.
Funeral services were conducted
by his pastor, the Rev. Wynne C.
Bolick, Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at
the Mackey Mortuary. Interment
was in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Mrs. Lester, 85,
Rites Last Friday
Mrs. Ida Byrd Lester, 88, died
early Thursday morning at a Co
lumbia hospital after an illness of
two months. 1
Mrs. Lester was born, reared and
spent her entire life in Newberry
county and was the daughter of
the late John and Liza Kibler
Schumpert. She was a devoted and
active member of St. Lukes Luth
eran Church. Her husband the laid
Newton R. Lester proceeded her to
the grave a number of years ago!
She is survived, by three sons;
Claude L. Lester; Raymond Lester;
Eugene Lee tor* all of Newberry;
three daughters, Mrs. .Dudley
Moore, Mrs. Forest Shealy,-both of
Prosperity; and Miss. Evoline Les
ter, Newberry.

Funeral service^ were held Fri
day afternoon at 3 o’clock fronj
St. Lukqs Lutheran ChurcK near
Prosperity, with Dr. T.- F, Sober
conducting the, service. Interment
followed, in the Church cemetery.
James Stewart, 69,
Dies Suddenly Here
James W. ( ‘Jim”) Stewart, 69,
died suddenly last Thursday morn
ing at his home on Pope street.
Mr. Stewart was horn in Laun-
ens County, a son of the late Glenn
and Tallie Dones Stewart. He was
employed by Kendall Mills and al
so operated a taxi for a number of
years.
He is survived by his widow,
Mrs. Maggie Mize Stewart and one
son, Glen L. Stewart, both of
Newberry; one adopted son, Pres
ton Bodie of Denver, Colo.; two
grandchildren and one-great-grand
child.
Funeral services were conducted
Saturday afternoon from Hunt Me
morial Baptist Church by the Rev.
C. M, Johnson and the Rev. J. E.
Walker. Interment followed in
Rosemont cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Frank
Cook, Ernest Ward, Andrew Wil
lingham, Wirt Jennings, A. H.
Clark and Henry Kibler. Nieces as
sisted with the flowers.

Dies. Suddenly
Mrs. Elisabeth Lee Propes Coop
er, 75, wife of R. L. Cooper, died
suddenly at her home on Nance
Street in Whitmire Saturday after
a short illness.
She was born and - reared in
York County, daughter of the late
L. A. and Lethla Ann Barker
Propes. For 45 years she had lived
in Whitm|re, - and was charter
member of First Church of God.
She was a member of the Women’s
Missionary Society.
Surviving in addition to her hus
band are one daughter. Miss De-
metriue Cooper, Whitmire; two
sons, Fred L., and Ralph Cooper,
Woodruff; one grandson, three
sisters, Mrs. D. D. Robbins, Great
Falls; Mrs. W. P. Vaughn, Green
ville; and MrS. W. W. Collins,
Whitmire; three brothers, Howard,
Greer; Lee and Frank Propes,

Funeral services were conducted
Sunday at 4 p.m. at the home by
the Rev. M. S. Jaynes. Burial fol
lowed in Whitmire cemetery.
Services Monday For
County Businessman
Byon Nichols, 83, died Saturday
morning at the Newberry County
Memorial Hospital after a long pe
riod of declining health and two
months of critical illness.
Mr. Nichols was born in Lisbane,
Maine, son of the late Charles and
Mary Finney Nichols. At the age
of 28, he came South to Pacolet
where he was employed by the
Keystone Granite Company under
contract to build an addition to
the old State Capital, Columbia,
which was damaged during the
Confederate War. In 1904, he work
ed on the Dry Dock !n Charleston.
In 1913, he, with the late James
Stephens, Sr„ opened a quarry
and monumental business in Pa
colet and later operated a; business
at Cold Point, Laurens County,
where he furnished the finished
granite tor the Lutheran Crurch
in GreenviHe and the Norwood
High School and Norwood Bank of
Greenville, the entrance at Oak
Hill Park in Greenwood, the Tex
tile Building at Spartanburg and
others.. He came to -Newberry
County in 1924 and established the
Carolina Royal Bine Granite Com
pany, which he owned and operat
ed until his retirement when he
was succeeded by his son. He and
his wife celebrated * their 50th
wedding anniversary on March 13,
1954.
He was a Mason and he received
his 60-year pin in 1952. He was a
member of Pacolet Presbyterian
Church. ‘
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lil
lie Harvey Nichols; one son, Ray
mond B. Nichols, Newberry; one
daughter, Mrs. Roland Brooks, Co
lumbia; one sister, Mrs. H. L. Put
nam, Templeton, Mass.; and three
grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted
Monday, at 4 p.m. at the home in.
the Mount Bethel-Garmany com
munity by the Rev. Neil E .Trues-
dale. Burial followed in Springdale
Cemetery with full Masonic rites.

bride of Delmas Carnell Richard-
qpn, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. O.
Richardson of Newberry, in a
double ring ceremony performed
at 5:30 p.m. in the parsonage of
SL Paul’s Lutheran Church of
Pomaria. The Rev. J. L. Drafts,
pastor, performed the ceremony
in the presence of a few close
relatives.
The bride and bridegroom en
tered the ceremony room without
attendants. The bride was attired
in a navy spring suit with white
and navy accessories. She wore
an orchid corsage.
While the bridegroom is station
ed at Camp Gordon the bride will
make her home with her grand
mother, Mrs. C. J. Cook of,New
berry. ■'
