POP S INCORPORATION
By Maurice Vincent

ms;
O LD man Mason had been the
proprietor of “Pop’s Popcorn
Stand” for nearly fifty years and
had loved every minute of it. But
now he was sad. He was sad (be
cause he was going to sell out the
business.
Angelia. his lovely daughter, re
cently a graduate from a fancy
finishing school in the East, hard
ly considered a popcorn stand dig
nified or important. And Angelia
had said in front of Mom. “Pop.
you simply mast sell that horrid
old popcorn stand . . . you simply
must!** Mom had agreed.
“Shucks, “ muttered Pop. He
was messing about; just rooting
through his stand like the bewil
dered and earnest old man he was.
He really didn’t blame his daugh
ter. 4ie had wanted Angelia to be
better than himself or Mom. That’s
why he had sent her to school at
such a sacrifice and after yean
of scrimping. But he )ust couldn’t
consider the stand as Just anoth
er popcorn stand.
“Shoot,** he grumbled. “Pop’s
Popcorn Stand is an Institution!”
But finally, the old man had
completely capitulated and the
place was up tor sale. His heart
wasn’t in it He had Just tacked
up a very small, actually tiny,
sign. And the sign read, in lower
case, “for sale." Pop figured he
had done his duty. The sign was
back of die door where it was al
most impossible to be seen.
“Hello, old sport, how’s tricks?"
Pop looked up to see his old friend.
Judge Gillespie.
“Hello. Judge.” said Pop wear-
fly.
The old Judge’s eyes twinkled.
He had known Pop and the whole
Mason family for many years.
“How’s Angelia?” asked the
Judge casually. The Judge stroked
his trim white mustache carefully.
“Angelia’s fine/* said Pop.
“School’s out, eh?”
The Judge made himaetf com
fortable.
“Learn a lot in those fancy
schools." the Judge said.
“Yeah," answered Pop bitterly.
“Learn to be ashamed of your fa
ther’s business!” The instant he
said it he was ashamed. After
all, he did want Angelia to be a
somebody! The world moved fast
and Angelia’s world looked down
on anyone who made a living in
a ... a ... a popcorn stand!
“Wants you to sell out?” asked
the Judge keenly. He sighed. “I
might have known it!”
Yes. she does.” admitted Po
unhappily. He told the Judge th
story and his old crony listen e-
attentively. He ended the stoi
by pointing dramatically to th
tiny “for sale” sign. And the
both old men laughed until tt
tears ran down their leathei
cheeks.
”Wbat you lack Is real clas?
said the Judge carefully.
“Huh?” said Pop, dumfounded
“Yep/* answered the Judg
“Your daughter Is absolute i
right, old friend, and you reall
should be ashamed of yourself
fSf look was kind.
“M’boy,” continued the Judge
“There is just one solution to your
problem . . you must move with
the times!” Hie Judge consulted
his finger tips. “Y’know as well
as I do how these young people
are today . you must have a
front!”
There was just a moment of
stunned silence on Pop’s part.
Then with wide grins ttye two
crony's shook hands. Because from
now on the popcorn stand would
still belong to Pop but under a
brand new name ... a brand new
front. “Yes sir/’ said Pop grand
ly. “From now on this place will
be cafled “POP’S POPCORN EM
PORIUM, INCORPORATED!**
And Pop figured that with a
name like that his women folks
were just bound to keep the busi
ness in the family.
