MR. AND MRS. EARL BUL LOCK returned to their home in Washington, D. C. last Friday after spending a couple of weeks here after attending the funeral ser vices of Mrs. Bullock’s parents. They were accompanied to Wash ington by Miss Caroline Kilgore who will visit her nephew. Colonel Legree Tarrant and family. MRS. ROBERT STARLING of Spartanburg, Spent the past week end with her aunt, Miss Theresa Lightsey on Main street. MISS FANNIE MAE CARWILE and Miss Theresa Lightsey plan to leave Thursday for Spartanburg where Miss Carwile will visit Miss Elizabeth Coppock and Miss Lightsey will join her niece. Miss Ann Starling, a‘ member of the Spartanburg School faculty, and they will attend a concert at Win- throp College Friday night. MISS VENIE GOODMAN has returned to Charlotte, N. C. after spending a week here with, her brother and sister-in-law Dr. and Mrs. R. A. Goodman on the college campus. MRS. EDITH P. GETZ of Lan caster, Pa., Mrs. L. V. Fulmer, I Marietta. Pa. and Mrs. Lewis Pitts and son, Sidney of Leacock, Pa. are expected to arrive Saturday to spend next week in the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Stone at their home near the city. MR. AND MRS. H. W. Mighton Home Lost In Hurricane Hazel The recently constructed $15,000 home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Might on (the former Sue Ella Peterson of Newberry), at Inland Water ways on Myrtle Grove Sound, about a mile from the ocean at Wilmington, N. C., was all but de molished two weeks ago when Hurricane Hazel hit the coastal sections of South and North Caro lina. The Mightons had been liv ing in their new home six months, having moved there on Good Fri day. ' inf of Darian, Conn., are visiting for a few days in the homes of Mrs. Styles’ mother, Mrs. James Bur ton and Mr. Burton on Harrington street. MR. McNeill, 49, of 728 Pickens Street, Columbia, died Monday afternoon of last week after 16 months of declining health. He was born April 25, 1906, in Columbia, a son of Mrs. Nettie Dobbins McNeill and the late Charlie Byrd McNeill. He spent his entire life in Columbia and was a retired clerk with the Southern Railway Company. Mr. McNeill was a member of Earlwood Baptist Church. Surviv ors include his widow, Mrs. Dolly Crosly McNeill; four daughters, Dorothy Louise McNeill, Phyllis McNeill, Beverly McNeill and Gai- nelle McNeill; his mother, Mrs. Nettie Dobbins Mckeill, Colombia; two sisters. Miss, Evelyn G. Mc Neill, Columbia and Mrs. Fred C. Gilbert of Newberry; one brother, J. Charles McNeill of Los Angeles, Calif., and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held l&st Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock at Earlwood Baptist Church. Interment followed in Crescent Hill cemetery in Colum bia. Newberrians Attend S. C. library Meet K Miss Mary Estelle Timberlake, Librarian of Newberry College and Mrs. T. Collier Neel, Librarian of the Newberry-Saluda Regional Library, attended the annual meet ing of the South Carolina Library association, which was held in Charleston Friday and Saturday of last week. The subject of the con ference was “Goal to go in South Carolina Libraries.” Dr. Lowell A. Martin, Dean of the Graduate Library School, Rutgers Univer sity, served as consultant. The luncheon speaker for the two-day session was Dr. Robert W. Patter son, of the University of S. C. De partment of Economics, who spoke on “Economic and Population Growth in the State and Its Re lation to State-wide Library De velopment. Mr. and Mrs. Paul F. Speece are occupying apartment 3 of the Sutton Apartments, 1905 College street. News & Cartoon College Woi Meet Wednesday The annual meeting of the New berry College Women’s League will be held Wednesday, Novem ber 10 at Smeltzer hall on the col lege campus. A coffee hour will be held for the faculty and mem bers of the league beginning at ten o’clock. Group meetings will be held at 10:30 a.m.' At 11 o’clock a program meet ing will be opened with devotions, after which a selection will be rended by the Newberry College Sinkers. The morning session will be concluded with* a dutch lunch eon in the college dining hall at 1:30 p.m. Price for the luncheon will be one dollar per 'plate. Friends and members of the league are invited to attend the session and the luncheon. Those who anticipate attending the luncheon are requested to notify Miss Hattie pelle Lester in order that ample preparation may be made. THIRD ARMY TO GIVE ARTIC SCHOOL EXERCISE Application deadline for Third Army officers who wish to attend the Army Artie Indoctrination School exercise to be conducted from Jan. 10 to Feb. 5, 1955, has been set for Nov. 8, according to Information received at Head quarters South Carolina Military District from Headquarters Third Army, Fort McPherson, Georgia. To be held at the Army Artie Center, Big Delta, Alaska, the ex ercises purpose is to afford train ing and experience in Artie winter operations to selected officer per sonnel, stressing the influence of environmental factors and survival In the Artie. One of the basic requirements for those applying is an excel lent physical condition. The rig orous tempo of the winter training demands that applying officer per sonnel be in top shape. ‘Hop’ Halfacre Back At Home Herman “Hop” Halfacre return ed to his home on Johnstone street last Wednesday from the State Park Hospital where he had been a patient for the past 17 months. He is reported to be doing nicely and is up and about part of the day. DR. AMAN ATTENDS INSTALLATION OF PRESIDENT ELECT WALKER Professor John A. Aman, Ph.D., head of the Department of Com merce at Newberry College, rep resented the college at the instal lation of President-elect Edwin Ruthven Walker of Queens Col lege in Charlotte, N. C„ on Friday, October 29. Dr. Aman was one of sixty representatives of colleges and universities. MRS. LESTER RETURNS HOME FROM HOSPITAL Mrs. C. L Lester, who under went a minor operation in the Newberry Memorial Hospital Mon day, returned to her home In the Hartford Community Tuesday, and is now getting along fine. HOWARD PARKS PROMOTED TO RANK OF CAPTAIN The many friends of Howard Parks, son ot Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Parks will be glad to learn that he has been promoted to the rank of captain at Fort Benning, Qa., where he is stationed. MRS. HEDGEPATH PATIENT IN LOCAL HOSPITAL Mrs. Harry Hedgepath was ad mitted to the Newberry Memorial Hospital Tuesday of this 'week where she is undergoing observa tion and treatment. HOLLAND ASSIGNED TO RECRUITING STATION Master Sergeant' Jesse D. Hol land, Newberry, has been assigned to the U. S. Army Recruiting Sta tion in Spartanburg, it was an nounced today by officials of the South Carolina Military District in Columbia. A veteran of over 18 years of military service. Master Sergeant Holland, entered the army Febru ary 7, 1 1936 at Fort Moultrie. Dur ing World War II, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Opera tions. Sgt. Holland is a son of Mrs. Emma Holland, Route 8, Iva. He is married to the former Mies Clara F. Hughes of Newberry.
