Dr. George Soloyanis, Director of Community Service of the South Carolina Mental Health Commission, will be guest, speaker. He will also show films on Mental Health. This will be an open meeting and the public is cordually invited to attend. Members are asked to take note of the change of meet ing. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Berley of Route 1, Newberry, Miss Berley will be honored in the special Miss Hi Miss edition of The Johnsonian, Winthrop College weekly newspaper. In February. The. honor senior girls from South Carolina and North Caro lina high schools will be the guests of Winthrop for a weekend April 1-3. Miss Berley is co-editor of her high school newspaper, feature editor of the Annual and a mem ber of Quill and Scroll. She was vice president of the sophomore and junior classes at Newberry High school. She is a member of the Beta club. Allied Youth, the French club and of the student council v Miss Berley plans to major in library science at college. The Miss Hi Misses are select ed from each high school on the basis of scholarship, character, leadership and personal attractive ness. Newberry County Board of Education. 25-2tc SEAMAN NICHOLS SCHEDULED TO RETURN TO STATES Charlie R. Nichols, seaman, US Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben C. Nichols, and husband of Mrs. Mar tha J. Nichols, all of Newberry is scheduled to return to San Diego, Calif., on Oct. 31st completing a six month four of the Far East aboard the radar picket destroyer USS Southerland. The Southerland departed from San Diego on May 4th, and joined the fast carrier Task Force operat ing off the Philippines shortly after her arrival in the Far East. After a period of operations with the Huntef-Killer Force, she was assignedyto patrol duty in the For mosa Straits. After a second tour with the fast carrier force, the Southerland returned to Japan on Sept. 22nd. The Southerland .visited Hong Kong on two occasions during her stay in Asian- Waters. Mrs. Garlington Rites In Virginia Burial services were held Octo ber 28th. in Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va., for Mrs. Anna Buford Garlington, widow of the late Gen. Ernest Garlington, a native Newberrian. Mrs. Garlington passed away at her home In Memphis, Tenn., on years Her two children, Mrs. Sallie Garlington Chamberlain and Gen. Creswell Garlington proceeded her to the grave. She is -survived by two grandchildren, Mrs. Sallie Barlett and Lieut. Henry Garling ton. Also by two nephews, A. C. and W. M. Garlington of Newber ry. the crew returned with souvernirs from this and other Far Eastern ports. 4-H Members Win Prizes At Fair Nine Newiberry County 4-H members exhibited 14 dairy calves at the State Fair last week. In the Jersey show on Tuesday, Fred Fulmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe K. Fulmer of Little Mountain, placed in the Best Fitted Animal Class. Billy Caldwell, W. H. Cald well III, exhibited the first place Junior Calf and also placed in the best Showman Class. Lenill Wick er, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Wicker of Little Mountain, placed fourth with both his Junior Calf and Junior Yearling and took third prize with his Produce of Dam. Leon Boland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Bbland, also of Little Moun tain, took first place in the 4-H show and second place in the open with his Junior Yearling Heifer. James Dominick, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Dominick, Route 3, Prosperity, placed third wRh bin Senior Yearling. Robby Ruff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Ruff, Route 2, Newberry, placed second with his Senior f Yearling, Third with both his Three Year Old and Aged Cows and second in the Produce of Dam Clafcs. In the Guernsey show on Wed nesday, Evangeline Lide, daugh ter of Dr. and Mrs. J. S. Lide, ex hibited the Best Fitted Gurensey, ^ first place Senior Yearling Heifer and Junior Champion Female. Al fred and Donald Boland, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Milton F. Boland of Pomaria, ‘exhibited second and sixth place Senior Calves, seventh place Junior Calf and first place Get of Sire. Alfred also placed in the Best Showman Class. The Nine Newberry County 4-H Dairy Calf Club members with their 14 calves won .a total of $305.00.
