SCS Districts
As of July 1, 1954 there were
2,597 soil conservation districts
established, and 21 other districts
being assisted by the Soil Con
servation Service in 48 stater,
Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands,
Hawaii, and Alaska. These dis
tricts contain an approximate total
area of 441,496,000 acres, reporta

■ Of the total 2,618 conservation
districts, the United States De
partment of Agriculture has enter
ed into memorandum of under
standing covering 2,586 districts
which include an approximate
total area of 1,430,000 acres and
4,781,000 farms.
The 2,577 conservation districts
in the continental United States
contain about 949,679,000 acres of
“land in farms” and ranches. More
than 4,743,000 farms are in these
districts. About 82 percent of the
land in farms and 88 percent of
the farms in the United States sure
now In districts. The 41 districts
in the Caribbean Area, Hawaii, and
Alaska contain an additional 58,*
896 ^arms, and 2,943,000 acres of
land in farms.
South Carolina was the second
state in the UnitedL States to be
come completely covered by soil
conservation districts. It has been
covered by SCD’s since May 7,
1943. Alabama, the first state to
reach this goal, has been covered
since April 24, 194L There are now
14 states in the United States that
are completely covered by soil

daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. G.
Archer, 701 Algonquin Drive, and
Mr. David Berrie Denning were
married Saturday, September 18.
at four o’clock in the afternoon at
the First Baptist Church, with Rev.
A. Hudson Hicks, pastor of the
church, officiating.
The bridegroom is the son of
Mrs. J. W. Denning of Newberry,
S. C., and the late Mr. Denning.
A musical program was present
ed by Mrs. Henry Bhme of Jeffer
son City, organist; Miss Sonya
Wilder of Oak Ridge, soloist, who
sang “At Dawning,” “I Love Thee”
by Grieg, and “The Lord’s Prayer.”
“Claire de Lune” was played dur
ing the ceremony.
The bridal arch was banked with
western huckleberry and Oregon
fern. Branched candelabra holding
white tapers lighted the altar. The
prie-dieu, for the kneeling couple,
was covered with a white satin pil
low.
The bride, who was given in
marriage by tier father, wore a
wedding gowji fashioned with a
fitted bodice of Chantilly lace over
satin, with short tight fitting
sleeves, and matching elbow
length mitts of lace. The low round
neckline was finished with an edge
of accordlan pleated nylon. The
three tiered skirt of pleated nylon
was paneled in front and back with
Chantilly lace. The fingertip veil
of English illusion was held in
place by a small fitted cap of
pearls and rhinestones. She car
ried a bouquet of cymbidum or
chids.
Serving as the briae's matron of
honor was her sister, Mrs. Carl 1L
Williams, of Oak Ridge. She wore
a ballerina length dress of sky
blue crystalette fashioned with an
shoulder neckline, short sleeves
and an accordion pleated panel in
the fropt of . the full skirt.' The
headdress was a peek-a-bqo veil.
Her fidwers were white chrysan
themums.
Little Miss Terrell Williams, of
Oak Ridge, niece of the bride,
served as flower girl. She wore a
white orgartdy dress over blue sat
in and carried a basket of chrysan
themums.
Miss Gail Mobury and Miss Mary
Re^d, both of Alexandria, Va., Mrs.
Lloyd Francis of Waverly, Ohio,
and Mrs. Robert Chapman,, served
as bridesmaids. They were dress
ed the same as the matron of hon
or.
Mr. Paul Denning of Chatta
nooga was his brother’s best man.
Groomsmen were Mr. Forrest
Carpenter of Baltimore, Md.; Mr.
James N. Parr, of Newberry, S. C.;
Mr. John Rich and Mr. William
Clarke of Morristown.
Following the ceremony the par
ents of the bride tendered the wed
ding reception in the church par
lors.
The bride’s table was covered
with a white linen cloth and held
an'exquisite arrangement of white
chrysanthemums. The wedding
cake was in three tiers. Brides’
pnnch, nuts and mints were served
with the cake.
Assisting in serving were Misses
Ruth Ann Landrum, Sara Conkin,
Clapdia Conch, and Mesdames Bill
Rader, EL L. Huff, and James Nor
ton.
For the wedding and reception,
the bride’s mother chose* a steel
blue crepe with black accessories.
She wore a purple orchid corsage.
The groom’s mother wore an
aqua taffeta dress with black ac
cessories. Her corsage was of
orchids.
The bridal couple left for a hon
eymoon in New York City. For
traveling the bride chose a red
tweed suit with winter white hat.
She wore an orchid detached
from her bridal bonqueL
The bride attended Asheville
City Schdols, and was graduated
from Lee H. Edwards High School,
Asheville. She attended Morris-,
town Business College,
The bridegroom attended New
berry City Schools, Duke Uni
versity, University of- South Caro
lina, and University of Nerth
Carolina. He is now employed with
American Enka Corporation as a
chemist.
