Council Of Newberry Garden Clubs
Holds Quarterly Meeting Tuesday

Clubs was held Tuesday, Septem

Bowers, Jr., reported the receipt
of $25.00 from the Oakland Plant
-of Kendall Mills for council having
furnished judges for their “Clean
TTp, Paint Up” contest. Mrs.
Mowers asked for the payment of
-does from the clubs that have not
done so to date.
A letter of thanks from Miss
Lester, Dean of Women at New
berry College was read thanking
Ihe councils cooperation in fur
nishing flowers for May Day. Also,
one from Mr. Weeks, Supt. New
berry County Memorial Hospital

Mrs. W. R. Stalvey
Dies Here Monday
Mrs. Willie Rogers Stalvey, 77,
died Monday morning at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. J. N. Bur
gess on Main street. She was in
declining health for several years.
Mrs. Stalvey had lived in Lat-
ta for 30 years prior to coming to
Newberry five years ago to make
her home with her daughter. She
was the daughter of the late Owen
and Sarah Elizabeth Brown Rog
ers of Mullins and was the wifb
of the late W. Henry Stalvey of
Latta who died 17 years ago. She
was a member of Latta Metho
dist Church, the Women’s Chris
tian Temperance Union and Latta
Garden Club.
Surviving besides her daugh
ter are a son, W. Hubert, Greens;
boro, N. C.; a brother, J. P. Rog
ers, Columbia; and a sister, Mrs.
W. R. Ware, Greensboro.
Funeral services were conduct
ed Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Whitaker
Funeral Home by the Rev. Neil
Truesdale. Burial was in Newber
ry Memorial Gardens.

-of the city to discuss plans for
* program of beautification, tree
conservation 1 and preservation.
The request for this group to meet
.•with city council was granted by
IMayor Wiseman. The group plans
4o request that two additional
members be added to the present
Tree commission—said commission
to be consulted on all matters per
taining to tree cutting. The budget
-committee of the council will be
asked to allocate an amount for
tree planting and conseryation.
The clubs comprising the coun
cil and all other garden clubs in
the county are requested by Mr.
Sutton, Newberry county Fair
manager, to again cooperate by
arrangements at the Coun
ty Fair. Entries to be in by 10:30
am., Tuesday, Oct. 5. The follow
ing is the schedule and cash
prizes offered in each group:
1. A mass arrangement.
2. A line arrangement.
3. A dried arrangement.
4. An arrangement of fruits and
vegetables—combined or separate.
5. An arrangement of roses.
First prize: $10.00. Second
prize: $7.50. Third prize: $5.00.’

clock with Dr. Marshall Dendy (a
former pastor of Aveleigh Presby
terian Church, who is Executive
Secretary of the Board of Chris
tian Education in Richmond, de
livering the opening address.

schools faculty. Mr. Waldrop was
away a couple of weeks.

Treasurer of Newberry County has
issued in the name of the State
and County, tax executions against
defaulting taxpayers of Newberry
