Spurred on by our good luck
fishing in the far-reaches of our
creek, we sought other means of
catching ’em''other than withTiook
and worm.
My daddy was the country doc
tor. Folks paid him in alf sorts of
ways. Old Uncle Harry Addy made
whiteoak split fish baskets or I
traps. He paid my father .for at
tending his wife through a long
spell of sickness with four of these
traps. My dad took ’em reluctantly,
feeling he had no use for them
but might be able to sell them for
a little .something. But he didn’t
lenow the needs* of us kids.
We immediately appropriated
those baskets, cut long foullice
vines to tie them with, and with
some corn bread with cotton cook
ed in it, we set out for that far
place on the creek.
My older brother was a good
fisherman, as well as hunter. So
he knew just, how and where to
place the baskets. He put a pretty
good size rock in each one to
hold it on the bottom. And the
other end of each bullic§ vine was
made secure to a tree or ekposed
root there on the bank of the
creek. All four baskets set, and.
we went home. That gang had 6 •
of us in it, 4 white and 2 colored.
. That night, it so happened, we
had a light shower. As we heard
it falling on the roof that night,
he told me it would be just right
if enough came to slightly muddy,
the creek. And sure enough it
did. When our crowd went to look
at the baskets early next morn
ing. each one was a-flutter with
fish, as we pulled it up. We had
had fish baskets before. But such
catches as these, we had never
seen.
We cut long pronged sticks to
string them on. And when we got
’em all divided out, each of the
6 of us had 52 fish! Not such big
ones, but they looked like whales
to us.
Now I want to tell you there was
rejoicing in the fish-hungry stone
hills wlien we got home.
