Not only are Home Demonstra
tion clubs a means for giving in
formation on cooking, sewing, etc.
but they serve as a tool so to
speak to improve communities.
Shown above is a pipture of
Pomaria’s Home Demonstration
club community project. This is
typical of the good community
work done by the club groups.
Mr. Cecil Berley, local filling
station and garage operator, of
fered the use of the land to the
c*lub if they would establish a
Roadside Park. As is true with
most Home Demonstration club
ladies they jumped at the chance
so to speak. Mrs. W. C. Koon, pres
ident and Pomaria club members
solicited with- the help of the town
and Boy Scouts. Today they
have a lovely park equipped with
lights for night use, running
water, two large picnic tables and
an outdoor fire place. Not only
does the community have a grand
place for get-togethers but they
have been suprised to find the
great number of out-of-town and
state visitors who have registered.
Not only has Pomaria been busy
helping or doing something for
their community but practically
every Home Demonstration club

For instance gratifying is the
work of two clubs, Sllverstreet
and Trinity, on the redecoration of
the school auditorium at Silver-
street They were instrumental in
getting a stage curtain, drapes and
black-out curtains for the win
dows.
Almost every club at times has
helped with the local school lunch
programs. Tranwood for instance
bought lunch for an underprivil-
edged child. Vaughnville club
members have donated food, dish
tow'els and equipment for the
lunch room. Bush River club has
helped to buy hot water heater for
the Home Economics room and al
so cabinets.
Gratifying too has been the work
with other community buildings,
etc. For instance Smyrna club
helped to beautify the local church
grounds. O’Neal too has helped
with similar work.
Since the school reorganization
programs, Home Demonstration
clubs have secured or helped
other organizations to secure old
school buildings for community
use..
Hartford community for in
stance,, the local Grange and Home
Demonstration club have worked
to establish a recreation center
for the youth. They have establish
ed a nice ball park, barbecue pit,
landscaped the grounds and bought
small recreational equipment for
use inside the building.
Other club groups working on
similar projects are Mt. Bethel
Garmany, Mt. Pleasant, New Hope
Zion and Jolly Street.
Remarkable has been the help
ing hand so to speak given the
less fortunate given by these
groups. Jalapa club purcased a
dozen vases for the local Count/
Hospital. SL Phillips project is
baskets, food trays, flowers for
the sick and needy. The Friendly
club prepared Thanksgiving and
Christmas baskets for shut-ins.
Doing similar work also were
Tranwood and Smyrna.
Mrs. Baker Renamed
Garden Club Officer
Mrs. Richard L. Baker of this
city was renamed chairman of
Roadside Development for the
second year at the concluding ses
sion of Garden Club of South Caro
lina convention.
Mrs. P. D. Meadors of Green
ville was installed as president of
the organization at the meeting in
Columbia which ended last Friday.
In addition to the installation of
officers, awards were made to
clubs throughout the state. Out
standing among these were the
Best Model Mile award presented
by the S. C. State Chamber of
Commerce. The $50 cash prize
went to the Hoe and Rake Garden
club of Columbia.
Two roadside parkway awards
were presented. Each was a $25
award made to the Dogwood Gar
den club (Unit No. 1) of Green
wood, and the Crepe Myrtle Gar
den club of Columbia. These
awards were presented by the
Garden Club of South Carolina. Of
the other awards, many were con
tributed by members of local and
state garden clubs.
Governor Byrnes has invited the
state group to work for the beauti
fication of the State House
grounds. The club invited him to
serve as an active member of the
club and to serve on the Road
side Development, Landscape De
sign, and Blue Star Memorial com
mittees.
Attending the meeting from the
Newberry Garden club was Mrs.
Price Padgett, local president,
and Mrs. C. I. Youmans, Mrs. T. P.
Crooks, and Mrs. Baker. .
