Attention Called
To Upped S.S. Tax
Beginning January 1, 1954, the
social security tax contribution
from an employee’s pay was in
creased for 1% percent to 2 per
cent. The employer’s tax contribu
tion was also increased form 1%
percent to 2 percent.
“This increase in the tax con
tribution is in accordance with the
tax schedule set up when the
Social Security Act was changed
in 1950, and is not a ‘new’ tax”,
says Miss Martha Pressly, mana
ger of the Greenwood social secur
ity office. This tax schedule pro
vides for periodic tax increases in
anticipation of future obligations
of the program, but the next in
crease is not until 1960.
The social security tax for
self-employed persons covered by
the law was also increased be
ginning with 1954. The tax was
changed from 2 1/4 percent to 3
percent. As the self-employed
pay their social security tax but
once each year, and that at the
time of filing their Federal income
tax return, they will "pay the pre
sent rate of 2 1/4 percent on their
1953 income. This will be due Hot
later than March 15, 1964, the in
come tax date deadline. The in
creased rate of 3 percent will be
on 1954 self-employment income,
and it will be due with the Fed
eral income tax on March 15,
1955.
Further information regarding
the changes in tax contributions
may be obtained from your near
est social security office. The
social security office in Greenwood
is located in Room 18, Post Office
Building.

with Newberry College since
1918, and has been President since
1930. During this time, the col

as an accredited institution, in
instruction, improved physical
plant, liquidation of indebtedness
and greatly increased student en

Dr. Kinard is a past district
governor of Rotary International,
a former member of the County
Board of Education, and past
chairman of the South Carolina
State Board of Public Welfare.
He is married to the former

Efird Kinard, assistant dean at
Hampden-Sydney college in Vir
ginia, and Frank ^Efird Kinard, a

SPANISH DANCE GROUP
(continued from page one)
make its debut at Carnegie Hall.
Robert Sylvester reported in the
New York Daily News that Ana
Maria’s ballet “changed the at
mosphere of Carnegie Hall into a
great performance similar to the
one at the Metropolitan Opera
House.”
Last season Ana Maria took her
company back to her native Spain
and danced in the principal cities
through the summer. Critics and
public received the ballet with
great acclaim. As one Madrid
critic wrote in the newspaper A.
B.C.: “Only those who, like Ana
Maria, carry in their blood the
genius of the Spanish dance can
maintain the purity of their art
through extended absence from
this country”!
Springfield, Minn., police re
leased a man held for threatening
a woman with a knife after he
explained that he had mistaken
her for his wife. That’s a sharp
way to make love!
