Worldwide Bible Reading During World War II, a lonely U. S. Marine on Guadalcanal con ceived a unique and inspired idea born of his desperate loneliness and the constant expectation of death. He could not be near his family physically, so he wrote and asked them to join him in reading the same passage from the Bible each day; in this way they could be together spiritually. The idea spread in the neighbor hood, then to tother neighbor hoods, then to other cities and states, and finally to other coun tries. Each year since, the idea has taken greater hold until last year people of 40 different coun tries all over the world partici pated in this Worldwide Bible Reading, observed each year be tween Thanksgiving and Christ mas. President Dwight D. Eisen hower is the Honorary Chairman of the program, and serving with him is a list of distinguished cit izens who compose the National Sponsoring Laymen’s Committee, This heartwarming movement involves no financial appeal., Its sole purpose is to encourage the reading of the same passages of the Bible each day by peoples all over the world so that they may be drawn closer to each other. It is hoped that this simultaneous reading of the Scriptures will help to bring closer together not only the people of peaceloving nations but also members of families that have been seperated and friends who have lost touch with each other. Never in the ten years since this movement began has the idea had greater significance and ap peal than it has today. The truce in Korea—already grossly violat ed by the Communists—has not ended the tension that keeps the world upset. Russia’s record of broken treaties and her stubborn insistence on a disarmament pact without international inspection cast further doubt on her sincer ity. So the peace-loving nations of the world have only one alternate —to gird themselves spiritually and strengthen their defenses. Only by keeping up our faith in God and His wisdom can we hope to dispel the gloom and fear that is everywhere. To promote the simultaneous reading of the same scriptural passages each day from Thanks giving to Christmas, the American Bible Society asked clergymen “SEES” PRESIDENT . . . Harmon Garage Friend Street Christmas Trees Can Be Put To Many Uses After New Year’s There are a number of things you can do with your Christmas tree after New Year’s besides burning it. If it is a fir, for instance, it can be anchored in the back yard— perhaps in a corner of the gar den—and used as a bird feeder the remainder of the winter. Pieces of suet and little feed bs^gs may be tied to the branches. A container of water should be placed beneath the tree and kept filled so the birds will have a drink every day. Or, cut off the branches and place them, curved ends up, over flower beds when the ground is ex posed. An evergreen mulch helps prevent the soil from heaving dur ing alternate freezes and thaws. Long branches may be built into little lean-tos to protect tender shrubs from sun scald. The needles of a Christmas tree can be sprinkled beneath acid- loving plants such as laurel, an- dromeds, rhododendron and blue berries. If the needles on the tree are still firm, use the branches in an outdoor windowbox. Moisten the soil in the box. Then push the cut ends of the branches down to the bottom and tamp the soil firm around them. This will generally give you greenery all winter. If you must burn your Christ mas tree, don’t toss it into a fire place. Cut off the branches and burn them safely one by one. And remember, a Christmas tree tossed into the street can be come a fire hazard if playful chil dren pick it up and make a bon fire of it in a vacant lot.
