COLUMBIA —Even though the
number of polio cases recorded in
South Carolina during 1953 was
slightly lower than in 1952, the
National Foundation for Infantile
Paralysis reports several .of its
county ^chapters exhausted all
local funds and have received aid
from the national organization.
As of December 11, the State
Board of Health had a record of
166 cases of polio for 1953 in
South Carolina. This compared
with 181 cases last year. The state
record was 457 cases in 1939.
There were no epidemics in this
state in 1953, altlujugh one
county, Greenville, had more than
40 cases.
Eight county chapters which re
ceived emergency aid from th.e
National Foundation weie Chester,
Clarendon, Colleton, Dorchester,
Greenville, Greenwood, Lee and
Williamsburg. Several other chapt
ers had practically exhausted their
funds at the year’s close.
Grants to these chapters totaled
119,775, compared with $13,850 in
1952.
Gamma globulin, a fraction of
human blood, used to prevent
paralytic pplio, was administered
in South Carolina, through the
state and county boards of health,
to household and neighborhood
contacts of all polio patients this
year.
There were no mass inocula
tions of gamma globulin on a com
munity-wide scale, as there were
in North Carolina with its 870
cases in 1953 or in Alabama, Min
nesota and several other states.
However, mass inoculations cover
ing three grades were given in a
school at Union in September and
covering two grades at Ware
Shoals in December.
