Q—As Chief Justice, Is Earl Warren getting a raise over his salary
as governor o." California?
A—Yes. $500-a-year As Chief Justice, Warren will get $25,500 (As
sociate Justices are paid $25,000). In terms of over-all benefits,
however, he will probably take a cut. As governor, he lived rent-
free in the executive mansion In Sacramento and was allowed
$12,000 in servants salaries, plus a $7,500 expense account. He
was granted a per diem travel allowance of $16-a-day while in
California and $18-a-day while outside the state. The California
National Guard provided him with a personal plane; and two
limousines—in Sacramento and Los Angeles—were made avail
able to him by the state. Under terms of a pending Senate bill
the salary of the Chief Justice would be raised to $40,000 Warren
will receive a $10,000-a-year pension from the state of California
beginning March 19. 1954.

If you want to shoot geese
first you have to find them and
then find their feeding grounds.
Preliminary to shooting is a trip
over back country roads and hours
with the binoculars. After you find
them, and the geese leave the
area, dig your pit and make plans
to return before daybreak the next
day. If geese have a weakness, it
is their tendency to return to a
certain feeding ground until the
food is exhausted or they are
driven out.
Geese usually feed twice a day,
although Jimmy Robinson says he
has seen them stay on sand bars
for two days without food. You
get your best goose shooting in
the morning but sometimes they
come out in the evening, usually
around 5 o’clock. Robinson re
marks in a story in Sports Afield
that most of his best shooting has
been around 9 in the morning. But
don’t depend too much on the reg
ularity of geese. They may come
into your field at daybreak.
You can’t beat a pit for con
cealment and the small, round,
waist-high single shooter-pits are
best for field shooting. After the
pit has been dug, remove all fresh
dirt and sprinkle dry grass or
straw around so it will look as
natural as possible.
Good goose decoys are essen
tial. Silhouettes and stuffed de
coys are tops, but makeshift af
fairs such as twisted newspaper
or napkins often work. Beware of
shiny decoys. The mo/e decoys
you have the better. Scatter them
so they will resemble feeding
geese. If you are shooting on a
shore or sand bar, most of your
decoys should be on land, a few
in the water. If you’re a serious
goose hunter, you nevet leave
your pit and you keep an eye peel
ed toward the water at all times.
When you spot a flock of geese,
get busy with the goose call. You
need only a few hours of practice
to learn how to use one. The mod
ern goose call is made with the
two necessary tones built into it,
so it’s only a matter of learning
breath control.
First, give them a heavy call to
attract their attention. But ease
up when they head for the decoys.
Put the call down when the geese
cup their wings and start circling
the decoys. Now comes the zero
hour—keep dow r n and don’t move
an eyelash. -Let them make their
first swing, and > above all, let
them come in as close as possible
before you spring up and start fir
ing. Shoot as they come in, not
after they have passed you, and
aim at their breads. After you have
had your first blast, duck down
again and stay in the pit. Geese
are curious and may make another
circle.

From Mrs. E. H. Hunter, Boone-
vllle, Arkansas: I remember in
September, 1901. when President
McKinley was assassinated.
At the time I was a teacher In
a remote, wooded district of Ala
bama. The school term was six
weeks between laying by of sum
mer crops and picking fall cotton
Pay for the term was $30 and
board.
The box-built schoolhouse of one
room had two doors—one for the
boys and the other for the girls,
three windows with wooden shut
ters, long home-made benches, a
small blackboard, a' few pieces of
chalk, a water pail and dipper
Water was supplied by a nearby
spring. The boys played on one
side of the house and the girls
the other, never together
The twenty pupils ranged in
ages from six to 19 and furnished
their own books, slates and pen
cils which they used from year to
year All brought dinner in tin
buckets with Uds and usually con
sisted of soda biscuits, fried meat
and eggs Some children walked
two miles Two children wore the
same dresses, washed and ironed
over the weekend, every day of the
term.
The post office was three miJef
through the woods. Only weekly
lewspapers reached the commu
lity The county seat was 19 miles
away
On Saturday of the week of Pres
ident McKinley’s death, the fami
