Q. Do you agree with the state
ment that recent developments of
your investigations Committee,
i.e., the transportation of Com
munist troops along the China
coast during the Korean War by
ships owned by British firms is
increasing the existing tensions
between the United States and
Great Britain?
A. First we must examine the
“existing tensions” before we can
answer the question. I think one
of the greatest contributing fac
tors to existing tensions is the
apparent lack of real unity among
the Western powers.
Unquestionably it is extremely
important to have complete unity
of purpose among the Western
powers if world peace is to be
attained. However, nothing would
be gained by covering up and
disguising a phony unity. Certainly
there is nothing unreasonable in
a request to our allies to stop
supplying . the sinews of war to
a mutual enemy. Certainly all
of the peoples of the so-called
free world are entitled to have
the facts brought to light when
any of or allies flagrantly abuse
a trust.
Q. Do you think the proposed
Bermuda parley can reduce the
so-called tensions?
A. The answer to that question
seems to me to lie in the ability
of the three powers to determine
whether peace or world trade is
of prime Importance. My opinion
is that if cessation of trade with
the enemy can be guaranteed un
til peace is accomplished, tremen
dous strides will be made toward
a oneness of purpose and the ac
complishment of our goals.
On the other hand, if Britain
and FTance can convince the
United States that trading with
the enemy is of more importance
than victory and peace, wo will be
exactly where we have been since
the Korean War started, since all
indications are that trading with
the enemy not only continued to
exist but has been greatly ex
panded over the past several
years.
Q. Do you have any figures to
prove that statement?
A. Yes. In January and
February of 1952, British trade
with Red China amounted to
$334,000 as compared to $5,750,000
for the corresponding months in
1953. This means that in one
year Britain’s trade with the
enemy has increased by approxi
mately 160 percent. In the same
two-month period, the trade be
tween France and the enemy rose
from $74,000 in 1952 to $2,584,000
in 1953—an increase of approxi
mately 3500 percent.
In this connection, let me quote
Senator McClellan, Democrat of
Arkansas, who during the hearings
observed:
“I have noticed a hundred
British ships, at a minimum, are
engaged in this trade and traffic.
I wonder how much that off-sets,
if it does not equal at least, the
contributions the British are mak
ing in the Korean War on our side
as allies. ‘ I think it is a pertinent
observation. It seems to me that
all of this tends to indicate that
the whole Korean operation is
geared into a policy of the United
Nations, in which we, our Govern
ment, acquiesces, that we must be
careful not to do anything to make
certain that we win this war.” And
Senator Dirksen, Republican of
Illinois, said:
“I was about to inquire of the
committee whether it is a fair as
sumption on the basis of these dis
closures that we are trying not to
win a war.”
Q. What ships carrying the
flags of our allies engaged in trade
with China since the first of this
year ?
A. So far in 1953, 162 Western
flag vessels have engaged in trade
with Communist China. These in
clude 100 British vessels, 12 Nor
wegian, 12 Greek, 8 Danish, 3
Italian, 8 Finnish, 5 Swedish, 4
French, 1 Japanese, 1 Pakistanian,
1 Portuguese, 1 from India and 3
from The Netherlands. This is an
absolute minimum figure and there
may be more than 162 ships in
volved. Proof was also presented
to our Subcommittee that 2 British
owned companies hnve engaged in
transporting Communist troops
and that one of these companies
was engaged by the Mutual Secur
ity Administration to haul Mutual
Security aid cargoes.
Q. The British have denied
that 100 British vessels have been
trading with Red China over the
past few months. How can the

was established centuries ago to
insure shipping, and has been en
gaged in that business ever since,
publishes the names and destina
tions of all merchant ships. The
names of the 100 British ships
whose destination was Red China
and their locations are carried in
the Lloyds Registry. This was also
confirmed through the Office of
Naval Intelligence. I would pre
fer to believe the Lloyds of Lon
don Registry and our Office of
Naval Intelligence than a com
pletely unconfirmed statement by
embarrassed British politicians.

Miss Bedenbaugh was awarded
the degree of Bachelor of Arts,
and Miss Lefler the degree of
Bachelor of Science.
Miss Lefler makes her home
here with her uncle and aunt, Mr.
and Mrs. J. Frank Hawkins In the
