MRS. ROBERT H. PARKS and

Wayman spent Friday night with
Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Counts on
Evans street en route from Miami,
Florida to their home in Fairfax,
Virginia and Washington, D. C.
Mrs. Wayman is the daughter of
the late Mr. Wood, British Am
bassador to the United States, and
Mrs. Wood.
Farm Women To
Observe HD Week
All over the United States
Home Demonstration women are
celebrating National Home Dem
onstration Week during May. Here
in South Carolina over 12,000 wo
men are enrolled. In Newberry
County around 433 members be
long to the 17 different clubs.
These clubs make up the Newber
ry County Council of Farm Wo
men t.
Not only do they learn easier
ways to do jobs in the home but
they are active in community and
county affairs. Last year out
standing work was promoted by
the council and Home Demonstra
tion clubs in many phases of work.
Probably the most outstanding
was the equiping of a kitchen in
the Agricultural Building. This
kitchen was set up for test work
of the local Home Demonstration
Agents and others.
Other outstanding accomplish
ments include the work the group
did during the past year as far as
health is concerned. $537.17 col
lected in the county for the Can
cer Drive; 28 pairs of pajamas
made for patients at State Park
and contributions to other worth
while drives.
The council encouraged music
and recreation among the clubs-—
robes for the county chorus were
purchased. Each club had two
recreational meetings.
Outstanding also was the co
operation between the council and
other organizations.
In connections with the local
REA Fair the council «had charge
of the concession stand and helped
with the talent show and beauty
contest.
The council cooperated with the
local county cotton council in se
curing a County Maid of Cotton.
Each year at the Civic. League
Decoration. Tea the council spon
sors a table of easily made Christ
mas Decorations. For the past
several years an attractively dec
orated automobile has appeared in
the Christmas Parade.
The beautiful flower show at
the local County Fair was another
example of cooperation among
groups. The council and local
garden clubs cooperated in dis
playing over 70 beautiful flower
arrangements.
At every opportunity the council
has ‘ encouraged and cooperated
with the youth of the county.
The council has studied the
world affairs and contributed to
drives for foreign work.
GREENVILLE TV TO GO ON
AIR WITH ABC IN AUGUST
WGVL television station in
Greenville, channel 23, has signed
a primary-basic network affilia
tion with the • American Broad
casting Company, Ben K. McKin
non, general manager of the
Greenville Television Company an
nounced this week.
WGVL, which will serve the
Greenville - Anderson - Spartanburg
area, will have transmitter on the
peak of Paris Mountain more than
1140 feet above average terrain,
causing a wide coverage range of
clear TV coverage.
The station plans to go on the
air with test pattern in July and
begin regular commercial pro
grams the first week in August.
JACK TAYLOR TO ATTEND
OFFICERS CANDIDATE SCHOOL
Jack Taylor, a member of the
Naval Reserve Corps, has been
called for duty, and will report
to Newport News, R. I., on May
10, where he will attend officers
candidate school. His wife will
make her home in Gastonia, N. C.,
with her parents while her hus
band is attending school.
Prior to being recalled to the
service, Mr. Taylor was head of
the Chemical Department at Jo
anna Mill.
The Taylors moved to. Gastonia
last Thursday.

NEW YORK VISITORS
i Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Hawley of
Flushing, N. Y., who are spend
ing this week in the home of Mr.
and Mrs. James Burton on Har
rington street, were entertained
with a buffet supper by the Bur
tons Wednesday night. '
Eighteen friends of the Burtons
were invited for the ocassion to
meet Mr. and Mrs. Hawley.
The Hawleys will return to
their home in Flushing, Saturday.

2. That $600.00 per year be
turned over to the Civic League
and its Board of Control, which
money will be spent for Park
Maintenance. Itemized statement
of said expenditures to be ren
dered by our Board of Control to
City Council annually. This item
and more has been cleared from
Pool funds after all repairs and
improvements and Pool person
nel were paid.
3. That all water, lights, globes
and repair relative to same, in
Park area be met by the City.
4. That operation and use of
Pool and Large Eating Pavilion
revert back to Civic League and
its Board of Control, if they wish
it, when City of Newberry ceases
to have a city-wide recreational
program.”
There was some question as to
what period the $600.00 mentioned
in item two was to cover. Mr.
Wiseman asked Mrs. Summer to
appear before council and clarify
this and several other minor
items. Mrs. Summer stated be
fore council that the $600 was for
a full year of operation, or $50.00
per month for the remainder of
the fiscal year.
Councilman Layton made a mo
tion that the $50.00 per month <be
paid. It was seconded by Mr. Mar
tin.
With the clarification of the
Civic League’s stand, it is
thought that the recreation pro
gram will get underway shortly.
Following the special council
meeting, a joint meeting of the
Newberry and Clinton councils
and the Clinton-Newberry Natur
al Gas Authority was held. Plans
were discussed at this meeting for
the operation of the system by the
two cities in order that the gas
authority would not have v to hire
a staff for the operation of the
system. Tentative plans call for
the City of Newberry to operate
the system in Newberry and as far
as Kinards, and Clinton would op
erate the line from there to Clin
ton. Under this plan, meter read
ing, servicing and billing would
be done by the two towns.

four o’clock.
METHODIST WOMEN TO
ORANIZE GUILD
Mrs. J. K. White of McCormick,
Secretary of the Greenwood Wes
leyan Service Guild, met with a
group of women at Central Metho
dist Church on April 29 in the
Ezell Bible classroom for the pur
pose of organizing a Guild. Mrs.
F. Scott Elliott introduced Mrs.
White and presided until Mrs. L.
W. Bedenbaugh was elected temp
orary chairman. Mrs. F. G. Hart
ley served as temporary secretary.

It is expected that around
twenty-five ’ gainfully employed

POPE CONNELLY RETURNS
HOME FROM HOSPITAL
Pope Connelly returned to his
home on Caldwell street Monday
afternoon from the Veterans Hos
pital in Columbia, where he was
a patient a month. He underwent
surgery on April 28th. He Js
now recuperating nicely and able
to be up and about his home.
