Old Camden Courthouse Once Served
as Legal Chambers and "Barn”
Had Robert Mills, the South Caro
linian who designed such famous
structures as the Washington
Monument and the United States
Treasury Building, realized that
one of his most beautiful buildings
would serve as a cow shelter he
might have built it differently.
But aside from this indelicate
reference to a part of its existence,
the Old Courthouse in Camden
is one of South Carolina’s real
treasures. #
Built in 1826, the -Old Court
house served for many years as
the Kershaw County legal center
and legend tells that neighborhood
cows grazing in the streets sought
refuge in its basement on blustery
nights as late as 1881.
It is a two-story, buff-colored,
stucco brick building, with corner
pilasters, classic frieze, gable roof,
and pedimented portico. A broad
flight of simple steps with iron
handrails leads to the second-floor
balcony under the portico.
Originally built with six sand
stone Ionic columns supporting the
portico, the structure was some
what remodelled in 1847 when the
four Greek Doric columns were
substituted and the capitals of
the former were used for carriage
blocks.
The Old Courthouse, now the
Masonic Hall, is located on Broad
Street in Camden between King
and Bull streets. Around it under
spreading elms you will still find
many dignified old public build
ings and homes of its day, but the
center of town has long since
moved away.
*It stands quietly alone in the
austere dignity of a bygone day,
but it has lost none of its beauty.

ner sville, Ind.: I remember a lit
tle one-room store at Frankfort,
Indiana. Half of the counter was
enclosed with screen wire to keep
hands out of the candy. A kerosene
barrel with a hand pump took up
part of the little space in front
of the counter. If we made the mis
take of asking for the oil before we
asked for bread we got a good
scolding from the storekeeper be
cause she had to wash her hands
before wrapping bread. 0
From Mrs. M. E. Herring, Can
ton, Mississippi: I remember one
of the old-fashioned remedies used
to Qure chills and fever. It was
called a bitter cup. TTie cutf was
in the shape of an hourglass and
was yellow, either made of yellow
wood or yellow from medication.
The cup was filled with water and ^
after it had set for three or four*
hours was ready to drink. The dose
was repeated every three or four
hours. There never was such a
bitter dose.

A FTER washing the face with
soap, it’s no trick to get all
the soap off if you use a vinegar
rinse. Aromatic vinegar is most
pleasant to use, one tablespoonful
in the bowl of rinse water.
Stains on the fingernails which
prove stubborn will usually yield
to a mixture of 60 grains of oxalic
acid dissolved in 20 grains of* rose
water. Wipe the nails off with a
chamois. Polish with a dry towel
after the treatment.
Want to perfume your handker
chiefs? Wash them with a small
piece of orris root in a muslin bag.
The result is a taint aroma of
violets.
Hose will last longer if you run
them under tepid water immediate
ly after removing from the feet.

Pineapple-Rice Dessert
(Serves 10)
1 cup cold cooked rice
1 cup drained, canned crushed
pineapple
1 cup quartered marshmallows
1 cup chopped walnut meats
1 cup heavy cream, whipped
Combine ingredients in order
listed and chill thoroughly. Serve
in sherbet glasses, garnished
with additional whipped cream,
if desired.
