Ever tried peppermint sticks as
muddlers with tea? They’re tasty
and interesting. Try them with co
coa for the youngsters, too, to give
them a real treat.
Chipped beef or Welsh rarebit
can be made more appetizing by
tossing in some peanuts. They give
interesting texture.
Grilled cheese sandwiches are
excellent when served with a sauce
made by heating condensed cream
of mushroom soup which has been
thinned slightly with some milk.
Fish and chicken sandwiches,
grilled, are good with the sauce,
too.
Stuff dates or cooked, pitted
prunes with peanut butter and top

Minted Peach Salad
(Serves 6)
6 canned cling peach halves
Salad greens
1 cup cottage cheese
% cup celery, chopped
3 tablespoons lemon juice
V* cup mint jelly
3 maraschino cherries
Drain peaches and arrange
cup side up on salad greens.
Blend cheese and celery and
fill peaches with mixture. Beat
lemon juice into jelly and top
cheese-filled peaches with this
mixture. Decorate each peach
half with a half cherry.

are nice as a snack or a salad ac
companiment.
Nice garnish for meat? Dip apri
cot halves in beaten egg and bread
crumbs and saute in hot fat in the
skillet. Serve hot.
To give cabbage slaw an inter
esting “personality,” mash ah avo
cado and add to it soured cream,
crumbled blue cheese, lemon juice
and salt with a dash of pepper.
Mix thoroughly through finely
shredded cabbage.
Insert tart apple slices in slits
made on the fat of oast pork to
give interesting flavor to the gravy.
Mashed potatoes will be rich and
delicious if you add some soured
cream along with the other in
gredients when making them.
Farmers Enrolling
In State Contests
Clemson, April 13 — County
agents are now accepting applica
tions from farmers who desire to
enroll in the three state-wide con
tests being conducted under the
supervision of the Clemson Ex
tension Service. These contests
are the State 5-acre Cotton Con
test, the State Corn Contest, and
the State Green Pasures Contest.
Sponsors of the cotton contest
are the South Carolina Textile
Manufacturer’s Association and
the South Carolina Cottonseed
Crushers Association. State and
district pries totalling $2000 have
been made available by the Tex
tile Manufacturer’s Association
and first and second county pj-izes
of $50 and $25, respectively, for
each county in which 10 or more
contestants complete demonstra
tions have been provided by the
Cottonseed Crushers Association.
There is also a $500 state sweep-
stakes i>rize made available by the
Atlantic Cotton Association. The
Cotton Association is also offer
ing a $500 scholarship in a 4-H
Club Cotton Contest.
The South Carolina Plant Food
Educational Society is sponsor of
the State Corn Contest. Prizes
totalling $1750 have been made
available for first and second
place winners in'the state and in
each of the three extension dis
tricts. The awards are based on
official one-acre yields. In addi
tion each contestant who pro
duces 100 bushels or more of corn
on one acre will become a mem
ber of the State 100-Bushel ^Corn
Club. New members will receive
gold keys and those who have
already received keys will receive
certificates.
The 1953 State Green Pastures
Contest is being sponsored by«the
Farmers Cooperative Educational
Association. This association has
made available $500 for prizes in
each of the three extension dis
tricts. The Florence Morning
News is contributing an addition
al $500 to be used as prizes in the
Pee Dee District. Awards will ts
made in new permanent pastures,
and in pasture management
phases of the contest. The awards
will be based on wise land use;
adequate seasonal forage; effec
tive use of plant food; quality
pasturage, hay, and silage; and
good grassland management. In
addition to the cash awards, be
ginning in 1954 special recogni
tion will be given each year during
the annual Farm and Home Week
to the top grassland farmers of
the preceding year. Grassland
places will be awarded to 46
county winners, 3 district win
ners, and 1 * state winner.

T HE FIRST green garden snake
made its appearance m our
yard. It showed up at several
places.
First, it must have been in the
yard, because the boys brought it
into the house, and the oldest held
it out and said, “Look, Pop, what
we found.”
The scream that followed brought
the wife and grandmother running.
“Take it away,” shouts I.
“Calm yourself,” says the wife,
“it’s only a little snake.”
“Sure, Pop,’ says the oldest boy.
“It’s cute.”
“Sure,” says I. “It’s cute, but I
hate snakes. And I hate people
who frighten people who are fright
ened of snakes. Take it way!”
I retreated to my bedroom and
tried to compose my shattered
nerves. But I had made a mistake.
I had told the boys I was fright
ened of snakes.
After dinner, and still shaking
like a lamb going to slaughter, I
retreated to my bed. With a good
book and the radio turned low I
relaxed. And then something cold
crawled over my feet.
I tried to scream, but nothing
came out. I fled to the living room.
“Where are they,” I croaked to
the wife. “That snake, they put it
in my bed.”
“Now, dear, take it easy. They’re
asleep.”
“Asleep or not, to the basement
they go,” says I and marches to
their bedroom, the wife in hot pur
suit.
At their bedroom door the wife
catches me. “Aren’t they sweet,”
says she pointing to the little
demons. “Just like little angels.”
“Huh!” snorts I, and retreated
to the living room. “Then you get
that snake out of my bed and call
me when its gone,”

Cpl. Erizell M. Means, son of
Mr.' and Mrs. Shealy Means of
Route 2, Whitmire, is returning
to the U.S. under the Army’s rota
tion program -after serving ten
months in Korea with the 25th In
fantry Division.
Now the senior American divi
sion on \the peninsula, the 25th
landed in July 1950, shortly after
the Communists attacked the Re
public of Korea.
