Texas Corn Chips Will Enliven Your Cooking

C ATTLE, cotton, oil, corn chips, tall handsome men and
gracious women, that’s the Texas we saw.
From Fort Worth to San Antonio, from east to west in
Texas, we ate chili and nibbled on golden corn chips to
our heart’s content.
In Dallas, Nell Morris, director of Frito Company’s research
kitchens, gave us lessons in how to use com chips to brighten up
ordinary dishes. You don’t have to live in the hospitable Lone Star
State to serve these unusual dishes to your family and friends. All
you need is some of the know-how Nell Morris gave us under the
T^y ■>" sim-’une.
Texas Baked Beef Haah
(Serves 6-8)
Tv/v; medium old potatoes, 1 teaspoon salt, Vi teaspoon black
pepper, 1 medium onion (chopped), 2 cups cooked ground beef, 1 can
condensed cream of mushroom soup (diluted with 1 can water), 1 cup
lightly crushed corn chips (measured after crushing), % cup grated
American cheese.
In an oiled casserole, arrange a layer of thinly sliced potatoes
sprinkled with salt and pepper. Next a layer of chopped onion.
Repeat. Top with the cooked ground beef. Heat soup with one can
of water and pour over the beef. Sprinkle corn chips and cheese
on top. Cover, bake in moderate oven (325 degrees F.) f-r —« hour.
Corn Chip Tomato Rabbit
(Serves 6-8)
1 u .^ons butter or margarine, 2 tablespoon n^ur, 1 cup
milk, 1 can condensed tomato soup (10^ ounces), 1 medium onion
(chopped), XVi cups grated cheese, 2 cups com chips.
Make a white sauce of the butter or margarine, flour and milk.
Add 1 cup cheese to white sauce and stir until melted. Add soup

Sprinkle the top with the remaining cheese and com chips. Bake in
moderate oven (350 degrees F.) for 20 minutes.
Azalea Festival
Set April 14-18
A Newberry Miss (yet to be
chosen) will be one of 46 pretty
girls to grace and glamorize
Charleston’s annual Festival of
the Azaleas which will be held
this year from the 14th to the
18th of April. There will be many
azalea blooms at the time of the
festival but Charleston’s famous
gardens are always a treat and the
festival itself well worth a trip
to South Carolina’s hostorical
Charleston. Following is a press
release from the Festival commit
tee:
Shiver my timbers, mates, the
hanging of Stede Bonnet will be
reenacted in Charleston during
the Azalea Festival April 14-18.
Bonnet was a notorious “gentle
man” pirate of the early 1700’s.
He was captured and hanged on
Charleston’s Battery.
In addition to this historical
theme, the Festival will include
several other innovations, among
them a square dance exhibition, a
Teen-Queen contest, and a show-
boat tour for the queens.
Traditional festival events will
include the parade of floats and
bands, the lancing tournament (on
horseback), the fireworks display,
the street criers contest, the pet
parade, the Citadel dress parade,
several dances with a name band,
and the selection and coronation
of Queen Azalea XIV..

Nance To Open
Offices In Denmark
Captain and Mrs. Drayton
Nance, Jr., and two sons, Jim and
Jon moved to Denmark from
Greenville last Saturday, to make
their home.
Captain Nance, who has been in
the Army Air Force for the past
21 months as a member of the
Medical Corps, stationed at Don
aldson Air Base in Greenville, will
receive his discharge on April
30th. He will begin his termnial
leave on March &th, and will be
gin practicing medicine in Den
mark.
Prior to going into service, Cap
tain Nance practiced medicine in
North.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Drayton Nance of this city, and
Mrs. Nance is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Wyche Dickert of
Columbia.
will be 25 or 30 of South Caro
lina’s loveliest young women, the
girls who represent their home
towns in the contest for the
Azalea crown. These visiting
queens will be housed for the
festival’s duratice at the Fort
Sumter hotel. They will see and
be seen by all festival celebrants.
The girl selected as the new
queen will he given a trip to
Washington and will reign at the
1954 festival.

ing queen.

Has Heavy Milker
William Senn, Route 3, New
berry, is the owner of a registered
Jersey cow that has recently com
pleted a Herd Improvement Regis
try production record of 11,273
lbs. milk containing 683 lbs. but-
terfat at the age of 10 years and
3 months.
The official record was made by
Observer Magnate Joy and her
tests were supervised by The
Clemson Agriculture College for
The American Jersey Cattle Club,
Jersey breed registry organization
located at Columbus, Ohio. In
terms of a production record made
at a mature age on a twice-daily-
milking, 305-day basis, this record
is equivalent to 12,626 lbs. milk
containing 653 lbs. butterfat.
Cousins* Helped
Spike The Dikes
First Lt. Warren R. Cousins of
this city, was a member of an 1,-
800-man team from the U.S. Army
who helped sandbag the dikes in
Holland during the recent disas
trous floods in the country.
Lieutenant Cousins entered the
army in April 1951, arriving over
seas the following May. He is a
member of the 1279th Combat
Engineers stationed in Germany.
A 1950 graduate of Clemson col
lege, he is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ira T. Cousins of Newberry,
route four.
