Homes Open To Public
Charleston, S. C. (Special) —
Again the Eastern Seaboard is
opening its finest private homes
to the public. This spring, homes
and gardens will be on tour in
Charleston, South Carolina, in
Virginia, Maryland and around
Philadelphia. In Charleston twenty
of the handsomest historic private
homes are included in a series of
staggered tours from March 15
through April 12. In Virginia
several hundred places will be
open April 25 through May 3.
Both tours are remarkable this
year for the number of places
being opened for the first time. In
Virginia, throughout the state
there will be over one hundred
places added to the list, and in
Charleston six of the houses have
not been shown the public be
fore.
As each section blossoms into
spring and the country side as
sumes its loveliest appearance,
various non-profit organizations
open private homes and gardens in
this series of tours. In Virginia
during April and May there is
real natural beauty and the high
ways are most colorful with dog
wood and redbud, the private gar
dens are at their very best. It is
for this reason that the Garden
Club of Virginia, in the early
1920’s, selected the last week in
April for Historic Garden Week.
Most of the fine estates, many
of them of great historical in
terest are open to visitors only
during this one week each year.
The owners of Charleston’s hand
somest houses lend them to His
toric Charleston Foundation so
that with funds raised from their
tours they may further the preser
vation of Charleston’s architectur
al heritage.
In Virginia the highways are
plainly marked especially for the
visitors in order that they may
drive their own cars, saving time
yet enjoying the homes and gar
dens in a more leisurely fashion.
Architects, historians, a n tique
lovers, dirt gardeners, profession
al men all find much to inspire
them during Garden Week, and
more and more each year visitors
are repeating the experience of re
turning again and again to see,
not only how Virginian’s lived in
the past, but how present-day Vir
ginians live, and for this reason a
selected group of modern homes
and gardens are now included.
A guide book giving detailed in
formation on each place opening
as well as the directions to reach
them with the least inconvenience,
is available from AAA offices and
tour bureaus in most large cities,
or may be obtained direct from
Historic Garden Week office.
Room 3 Hotel Jefferson, Richmond
19, Virginia.
In Charleston, where Spring ar
rives early, are held the first
of the Eastern Seaboard tours,
which continue for almost a
month. From March 15 through
April 12, twenty homes will throw
wide their handsome panelled
doors to visitors. And at the
same time the Famous Gardens,
Magnolia, Middleton and Cypress
are in full bloom, with masses of
azaleajj, wisteria, cherokee rose,
thousands of bulbs and flowering
shrubs. The entire city, too, is
at its best.
Here all the homes are in the
city proper, in fact all of them are
located within six or seven blocks
of each other, in the most unique
residential section in America. In
this one small portion of a thriv
ing city, locally referred to as
“Below Broad Street,” are located
more buildings from the eigh
teenth century than in any city in
America. And a lovely section
it is, reminiscent to the traveler
of visits to France, England and
the Caribbean islands. Two great
rivers, the Ashley and the Cooper,
bound the town, making of it a
long peninsula, and it is at the
point of this- peninsula, with a
view of the water down many of
the streets, that most of the
old homes are located.
On the Battery, looking out
across the harbor with nothing
between them and the Canary is
lands except historic Fort Sumter,
is a row of stately houses. Several
of these will be on tour, and for
the first time. The Roper man
sion, built for a wealthy planter
of sea-island cotton in 1848, is
one of the fine crowning touches
to the classic revival. The heroic
portico is a choice part of the
superb view of Charleston from
the harbor. It has been the home
of several prominent families; of
the Rudolph Sieglings, of the Sol
omon R. Guggenheim’s and now

Another of the beautiful homes
on tour this year for the first
time is the Simons-Edward house
at 14 Legare Street, called the
Pineapple Gates house, because
of the beauty of its entrance way.
Built about 1800, it is noted for
the purity and elaborateness of its
Adams decoration. Now the home

fhere’s usually an easy way to rid
hem of stains if you use the right
riethod. Here are some common
itains and how to treat them.
Chocolate or cocoa stains on cot-
:ons or linens should be dipped in
lot water and then washed in rich
mds. Bleach ahy remaining stain
vith hydrogen peroxide. For col-
>red fabrics, use lukewarm suds
»nd sponge with carbon tetra
chloride.
Coffee and tea stains on fine fab
rics should first be sponged with
■varm water. Apply glycerine if the
itain remains and let stand for
aalf an hour. Rinse well then and
wash in lukewarm sudsy water.
RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Sausage-Spaghetti Sauce
(Serves 4-6)
1 pound bulk pork sausage
1 4-ounce can mushrooms
% clove garlic, minced
1 medium onion, chopped
Flour, salt, pepper
3 cups tomato juice
1 tablespoon Worcestershire
sauce
Crumble and brown pork sau
sage in skillet. Push to one side
and remove all but 2 tablespoons
fat from skillet. In this, brown
mushrooms, add -onion and gar
lic. Blend in 3 tablespoons flour,
add tomato juice and cook un
til thickened. Add Worcester
shire sauce, % teaspoon salt and
% teaspoon pepper. Simmer 30
minutes. In the meantime, cook
7, to 8 ounces spaghetti in 3
quarts boiling, salted water.
When tender, drain and serve
topped with sauce.
If egg or meat has marred your
washable table linens, soak first in
cold water, then wash in hot or
lukewarm suds depending upon
what the fabric can take. -For
non-washable materials, use car
bon tetrachloride.
Grease stains should first be
rubbed with soap, then washed ir
hot suds. If the stain remains, treai
with a solvent like carbon tetra
chloride.
Iron rust stains on cottons ane
linens respond usually to a soak
ing in oxalic acid solution. Wher
the stain disappears, place in 4
weak ammonia solution, then rinse
thoroughly

LOST IT IN A
MORE HUMANE WAY
A one-armed man walked into
a barber shop and announced he
wanted a shave. The barber invit
ed him to have a seat, that he was
just in time. The barber had just
received a new supply of razors
and he would give him the first
shave. Presently the stranger
winced as if the new razor wasn’t
new after all. Said the barber,
“haven’t you been in here before?”
“No, answered the stranger, “I
lost this arm at a saw mill.”

i.iade at home in less than an hour, the shower
curtain is hung. Heading, complete with eyelets,
was ironed to the plastic and two widths of the
film were sealed together with tape.
BY EDNA MILES
D ID you ever think about
making your own shower
curtains? It can be done in
less than an hour’s time, with
very little effort and no spe
cial knowledge.
The only materials you’ll need
are about four yards of vinyl plas-.
tic film which is available in most
department stores at about 39
cents a yard, your electric iron, a
light press cloth and two new
plastic tapes.
The first tape is one and one-
half inches wide. It has a coating
of adhesive vinyl that makes pos
sible a tight bond with a light
application of heat. It is used as
a heading for the shower curtain
and comes complete with inset
metal eyelets.
The heading is fairly heavy
gauge but transparent so that it
will reinforce the curtain top with
out obscuring the color and pat
tern of the material.
The s€*cond tape, also transpar
ent. is three fourths of an inch
wide arid is used for seaming the
plastic film. This tape has the
same adhesive quality and will
bond with the film easily under
your iron which should be turned
to “rayon” or “cool” setting.
