CLEMSON, Jan. 24—Brief in
formation on captan, endrin, and
methyl parathion, new pest con
trol chemicals, is given in Insect
and Plant Disease Notes. These
notes, prepared by workers of the
Clemson Insect and Plant Disease
Extension Work, also give infor
mation on new combinations of
fungicides and insecticides for
treating seeds.
CAPTAN
Captan is a new fungicide which
shows promise in the control of
diseases of apples, peaches, and
tomatoes. It was formerly known
as Orthocide 406. Experiments in
this area prove that it gives better
finish to fruits and is of value as
a seed treatment chemical.
SEED TREATMENTS
Several new combinations of
fungicides and insecticides, usual-,
ly including lindane, are now com
ing on the market. These combina
tions should give control of seed
corn maggot, sand wireworm, and
diseases which are controlled by

A searching romantic drama
that daringly deals with the sel
dom-mentioned problems of mod
ern marriage will occupy the
screen of the Newberry Drive-In
Theatre when George Stevens’
“Something To Live For,” a Para
mount picture, plays Sunday and
chemical seed treatment. Such
combinations should aid in explor
ing the possibilities and limita
tions in control of seed corn mag
got. Most of the research has
been done in the North on crops
like beans; but this insect is a
pest on crops like cotton, corn,
and many other vegetables in the
South. With an increase in soil
fertility and humus, the seed cofrn
maggot seems to be on the in
crease.
Formerly known as Compound
269, endrin will be recommended
for the control of the boll weevil
and bollworm of cotton. It will be
used mainly as a spray. It also
shows promise for control of in
sects of other crops. j
Methyl parathion, which is
similar to parathion as regards hu
man toxicity, is recommended for
control of spider mite and aphids
on cotton, and higher dosages are
said to exert some measure of
boll weevil control in addition.

tive, his wife, and the “other wo
man”—a beautiful actress whose
talent is slowly being sacrificed to
her passion for drink. Milland, as
a reformed alcoholic, meets per
former Fontaine while working for
an organization that aids problem
drinkers. His mission of rehabilita
tion soon flowers into a passionate
romance, and with his marriage
threatened, he is eventually forced
to choose between returning to his
old life and helping the girl who
cannot win her battle with alcohol
without him.

Mrs. Johnson
Died Thursday
Near Jalapa
Mrs. Fannie Longshore John
son, age 73, wife of J. William
Johnson, died Thursday night at
her residence near Jalapa. She
had been seriously ill for the
past 13 years.
Mrs. Johnson was born and rear
ed in Newberry county, a daughter
of the late Wilson E. and Lucy
Lake Longshore. She had spent
her entire life in the Tranwood
section of the county, where she
was a member of the Trinity Meth
odist church. She took an active
interest in her church and com
munity as long as her health per
mitted. She was a member of the
Women’s Missionary Society and a
member of the Tranwood Home
Demonstration Club.
She is survived by her husband,
J. William Johnson; five sons, G.
M. (Pet) Johnson, and Wilson L.
Johnson, both of Newberry; C. L.
Johnson of Whitmire, W. C. John
son of Laurens, and J. G. Johnson
of North Greenville; three sisters;
Mrs. W. O. Hawkins and Mrs. Lu
cy Brigman, both of Newberry,
and Mrs. Herman Pitts of Silver-
street; her step-mother, Mrs. Hen
rietta Longshore, of Newberry;
one sister, Mrs. J. R. Baker, of
Whitmire; two brothers, Roy
Longshore of Newberry and Mar
vin M. Longshore of Silverstreet;
five half-sisters, Mrs. Ella Mae
Weeks, Mrs. John N. Suber, and
Mrs. Haynard Satterwhite, all of
Newberry, Mrs. Frank Martin of
Silverstreet and Mrs. Marvin Gist
of Greenville; two half-brothers
Wilmer Longshore of Silverstreet
and A. C. Longshore of Newberry;
17 grandchildren, seven great
grandchildren and a number of
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conduct
ed Saturday at 2:30 p. m. from
Trinity Methodist church by her
pastor, Rev. R. M. Dubose, and
Rev. T. B. Altman. Interment was
in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Ever-
ette, J. W., Forest and Irby Long
shore, Eugene Johnston, Kenneth
McKittrick, Sherrard Martin, and
Omega Rivers.
Honorary escort consisted of
the stewards of Trinity church
and Eugene Shealy, Hugh Pitts,
W. E. Counts, and Hugh McCull
ough.
Granddaughters asisted with the
flowers. . '

security?
ANSWER: As a domestic em
ployee, you are covered if you
work any part of 24 days, and are
paid at least $50 during a quarter
for the same family.
QUESTION: My brother and I
are equal owners of a business in
Chicago, but for reasons of health
I live down here and have no
active interest in the business. He
receives a salary for running the
business. Do I receive social se
curity credit anyway? I will be
65 next January.
ANSWER: Yes, you do—if you
receive a net profit of at least $400
per year. You may be entitled to
benefits beginning in January.

‘Jungle Manhunt’

The latest action film In Co
lumbia Pictures’ “Jungle Jim”
series, “Jungle Manhunt,” shows
at the Wells Theatre next Wed
nesday and Thursday. Described
as a safari into savagery, the
film stars Johnny Weissmuller in
the Jungle Jim role and introduces
Bob Waterfield, football star of
the Los Angeles Rams. Other fea
tured players include Sheila Ryan,
Rick Vallin, Lyle Talbot and Tam-
