Thode of Clem- son College wil give a lecture on January 30th from 2 until 5 o’ clock in the First v .Methodist Church at Bennettsville. The group will meet in the Men’s Bible Class room. Prof. I s being brought to Bennettsville through the efforts of the Gar den Club council of Bennettsville. Professor Thode is an authority on plants and planting as well as landscaping. He was born in Walhalla, S. C. and was educat ed at the University of South Carolina and transferred to Clem son College where he graduated in Horticulture, after concentrat ing on the ornamental phase and landscape design. After serving in the army Mr. Thode did ad ditional work in landscape de sign at the University of Georgia. He then did graduate work at Cornell University in the field of ornamental horticul ture. Among Top In Industrial Growth COLUMBIA, Jan. 19—More than $67,000,000 was spent or alloted for industrial development in South Carolina in 1952, L. W. Bishop, director of the Research, Planning and Development Board announced today. The year’s developments brought the state’s post war industrial growth to $822,000,000, continuing giant gains in industry which plac ed South Carolina at the top among all states for industrial expansion from 1948 to 1951, Mr. Bishop said. “More important than the dol lar figures,” he said, “is the fact that since 1945 more than 103,- 000 new jobs have been created for our people, with new payrolls in excess of $247,000,000. , “It’s the jobs that count,” he added, “and after all it’s the char acter of the people that makes our industrial development possible. The people themselves and the sound government they have created are the two principle ad vantages South Carolina has to offer industry. ‘We now have a potentially much greater advantage in the ed ucational program launched by Governor Byrnes and our legis lature. This is one of the great est steps ever taken to further industrial development, since it will serve to augment the natural abilities of our people. “In addition, Governor Byrnes has aided materially by making trips with me to other states to see industrial leaders personally and demonstrate the character of our government. This always im presses them greatly and is of tremendous help.” Since January 1, 1945, the state has secured more than 1,000 n^|w industrial plants representing * a total investment of over $479,000,- 000. Also, more than 1,100 plant expansions have been announced or completed at a cost of approxi mately $342,000,000. These figures do not include the huge sum being expended on the atomic fuels plant in Aiken and Barnwell counties. Latest esti mates have placed the final cost at approximately one and one-haft billion dollars. Thus the state’s total post-war growth amounts to well over two and one-quarter bil lions. * , In its latest annual report Issued January 1, the Research, Plan ning and Development Board said the state has made substantial strides in diversification, citing as an. illustration the “impressive array” of heavy industry, tool mak ing and die work and machine re pair shops. “The experience of such plants, which require skills unknown to South Carolinians a few years ago, has clearly shown that our people are capable of acquiring the know-how necessary for heavy in dustry, and machine work,” the j^- port said. “This ability to learn quickly has also made it possible for South Carolina to attract a grow ing number of plants in new fields of manufacture. “The benefits which accrue tp the State from new industrial de velopment are almost impossible to measure. Polish the glass immediately with a chamois until dry and glossy Corks in glue bottles won’t stick if you coat the cork in melted paraf fin and let dry evenly before in serting into the bottle. If your shoes have a tendency to get wet soles easily, try coating them with several coats of shellac. This will waterproof them fairly well. It’s also a good trick to try on children who won’t wear rub bers. Clocks can be oiled easily and safely by taking a piece of cotton and soaking it in kerosene. Place the cotton inside the clock case. RECIPE OF THE WEEK Hot Horseradish Sauce (For Beef) 2 tablespoons butter 3 tablespoons flour 2 cups beef broth ft teaspoon sauce 3 tablespoons horseradish soaked in % cup water V4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Melt butter, add flour and stir until well blended. Add broth and salt. Add horseradish which has been soaked for 10 minutes, then the Worcestershire sauce. This may be used over boiled beef, or leftover roast beef. (Beef broth may be made with two bouillon cubes dissolved in two cups hot water).
