‘The Big Sky,’
Pioneer Adventure
To Show At Wells
A little-known chapter of Amer
ican adventure in 1830 is unfold
ed in "The Big Sky,” Howafd
Hawks’ stirring pioneer drama to
play at the Wells Theatre at a
late show Saturday night and Mon
day and Tuesday.
Kirk Douglas and Dewey Mar
tin as a pair of young Kentuc
kians seeking adventure. Eliza
beth Threatt as the daughter of a
Blackfoot chief, and Arthur Hunni-
cutt as an experienced mountain
man, have the starring roles in
the picture, along with Buddy
Baer as a boatman. The plot turns
on the stirring adventures of the
men, who join a fur-trading expedi
tion from St. Louis headed for the
upper reaches of the Missouri
River in what is today Montana—
a region few white men then had
ever seen.
The hazards of the trip provide
memorable dramatic moments for
film-goers ,and its scenic back
grounds of the Grand Tetons and
Wyoming’s famous Jackson Hole
region lend unusual realism to the
thrill-packed offering. Hawks pro
duced and directed the film from
Dudley Nichols' screenplay of the
A. B. Guthrie Jr. novel. RKO dis
tributes the production for Win
chester Pictures.

appearing in Warner Bros.’ ad
venture epic, "Along the Great
Divide” which plays Saturday at

Set against a background of
mountains and desert, the story
concerns a U.S. marshal who must
bring his prisoners across the
blazing Mojava desert to face trial
in a distant cattle town, despite
the heat, thirst and marauding
vigilantes that beset his party

“ON MONLIGHT BAY”
Following the popular success^
es of "The West Point Story” and
Tea For Two,” Doris Day and
Gordon MncRae are again united
in "On Moonlight Bay,” Warner
Bros.’ musical drama which makes
its local debut at the Newberry
Drive-In Theatre on Sunday and
Monday.
Filmed in color by Technicolor,
the romantic comedy is set against
a background of an Indiana college
town made famous by Booth Tark-
ington’s Penrod stories. The plot
concerns Doris Day as a young
tomboy who would rather play
baseball than indulge in romance
—until Gordon MacRae comes up
on the scene. From then on, the
film unreels a variety of comic
siuatione.
Most of the songs in "On Moon
light Bay” are classics which have
remained ever-popular through the
years, such as the title tune, "Cud
dle Up A Little Closer,” "I’m For
ever Blowing Bubbles,” "Smiles,”
“There’s A Long, Long Trail” and
“Till We Meet Again.”
Radio vocalist Jack Smith de
buts in the film.

DEFENDS CITY COUNCIL
(ccntinued from page one)
made by previous Councils, of
which we have no record, such
promises would not be any moral
obligation on the present Council
to make such contributions.
As you know, the City still main
tains a 39-mill levy, which existed
prior to World War II. It clearly
appears that the people of the
City do not wish the taxes to be
increased. In view of the increas
ed cost of every commodity, the
present Council has had a hard
time to meet its expenses on the
present levy. We certainly cannot
maintain the 39-mill levy if dona
tions are made, other than for cor
porate purposes, regardless of how
deserving such donations may be.
I tell you frankly that it is the
opinion of all members of the
Council that if the people in the
City wish a donation to be made to
the National Guard units and will
so express themselves by a vote
authorizing a special levy for such
purpose, that the City Council will
be glad to do so.
I am giving copies of this letter
to the local papers for general in
formation.
Very truly yours,
J. E. WISEMAN,
