Here’s good news for bird hunt
ers. The chuckar partridge, after
many long and disappointing ex
periments, now suddenly looms
as a great white hope over im
mense stretches of our submargin
al western land, much of which
is worthless for everything except
hunting. There is even a mild
hope that he may eventually come
through in a good part of the
United States and southern Cana
da, according to outdoor writer
Byron Dalrymple.
The chukar was first introduc
ed in California in the late 20’s;
then Oregon tried them; Washing
ton, Nevada, Nebraska and North
Dakota came in with some suc
cess. The eastern states heard of
these experiments and they start
ed raising chukars. Before long,
practically every state in the Un
ion was working with the bird.
But early hopes and successes
were swiftly dashed. The chukar
began vanishing just about as
fast as the game men could raise
and stock him. Outdoor writers
began to clamor for an end to
such nonsense as chukar raising.
It was a foolish waste of funds.
And then when new hunting books
were mentioning the chukar with
little more than a line saying it
had failed miserably and expen
sively, a most embarrassing thing
happened. The chukar did an
about-face and put everyone on a
hot spot.
Washington woke up one fine

day to discover that she had an
estimated several hundred thous
and chukars living in rugged back-
country canyons, and increasing
crazily. In Nye county, Nevada,
which probably has the largest
chukar population of any compar
able area in the country today, the
state game commission was able to
trap for replanting over a thous
and birds from a single rugged
canyon! In parts of the West the
vanishing birds were back in
force. Nobody knew just why, or
how, but there they were. Other
States have also been doing a dou
ble take.
What appears to be happening is
that a new race of American chu-
‘Red River’ Shows
At Wells Mon.-Tues.
John Wayne whose name for
years has become synonymous
with vital he-man screen char
acters, plays the greatest role of
his film career as the cattle
baron, Thomas Dunson, in How
ard Hawks’ exciting spectacle
|‘Red River,” which is being re-
released by United Artists next
Monday and Tuesday at the Wells
Theatre.
This great western which, in
scope and drama, takes its place
alongside such cinema classics as
“Cimarron” and “The Covered
Wagon,” catapaulted Wayne right
up into the number-one spot in
box-office star-ratings, a place
which he still proudly holds. Co-
starred with Wayne in the film is
young Montgomery Clift, who
also achieved star personality after
his role as Matthew Garth, Dun-
son’s foster-son.
Wayne was born Marion Michael
Morrison in Winterset, Iowa, on
May 26, 1908. When he was five
kars has been slowly building it
self up in the West, a race forged
in the hard going of a new land
which all but did in its stocked
ancestors. This seems especially
evident when current stocking
methods are considered. Pen-rear
ed stock, still used to some extent,
is not very successful in planting.
But when the “native” birds are
trapped and transplanted, they do
fine.
The chukar is now being talked
of in many sportsmen’s circles as
possibly being the savior of deter
iorating wing shooting. Game men
won’t go that far, but they are
mighty optimistic just the same.
his Scoth-Irish parents moved to
Lancaster, California, where they
lived on a ranch three miles from
the nearest schooL
It was while he was playing
football at the University of
Southern California that he at
tracted the attention of Director
John Ford, an ardent football fan.
Ford gave Wayne a job on the
20th Century-Fox lot during his
summer vacation.
In 1929, Wayne * was working
on the swing gang at 20th Cen
tury-Fox when he happened to
bump into Raoul Walsh. Walsh
was looking for someone with a
western walk to play the lead in
“The Big Trail,” and thought
Wayne looked the part. He was
given the part under a screen
name of John Wayne. The pic
ture won immediate success and
his film career was launched.
But he did not achieve nation
wide acclaim until he played the
role of “The Ringo Kid” in John
Ford’s “Stagecoach.” Recently
Wayne played again with Ford
when the famous producer-direc
tor made “The Quiet Man” in
Ireland.
A list of John Wayne’s suc
cesses include "The Spoilers,^
“Oklahoma” “They Were Ex
pendable,” “Pittsburgh,” “Sands
of I wo Jima;” “Rio Grande,’
“Operation Pacific,” “Flying
Leathernecks” and “Jet Pilot”—
rugged pictures all.
“Red River” is appearing on a
action-packed double-bill with
“Tulsa,” Walter Wanger’s Tech
nicolor drama starring Susan Hay
ward, which is also being re-
released by United Artists.
