John Carroll had one of Holly wood’s top movie stars for an instructor when he was prepar ing for his role of a swash buckling hero of the 17th Cen tury in Republic’s exciting film, “The Avengers,’’ adapted from Rex Beach’s novel, “Don Care less,” which opens Saturday at the Newberry Drive-In-Theatre. Carroll’s role in the film call ed for expert fencing—and though he had done and been most every thing else, from an auto racer to a deep-sea diver, Carroll had never fenced. Consequently, when he was assigned the star ring role in “The Avengers” he called upon his old friend, Carroll Wilde, to teach him the fine points of fencing and sabre fight ing. Wide was a champion fencer before becoming a movie star— in fact, had been selected to represent the United States in the Olympics when they were postponed because of the war. Wilde spent a month teaching Carroll the fine art of lunging, whirling, duelling, and claims that Carroll could become a champion if he continued practicing. THEY LIVE HERE NOW Mrs. O. F.
