Training Course For School Bus
Drivers Be Held Here July 7-12
The first of the three-day train
ing courses for 3,891 prospective
school bus drivers will begin Mon
day July 7, and others will fol
low at scheduled intervals through
August 30, the South Carolina
Highway Department announced
today.
Deviating from the plan fol
lowed last summer when the
training of 3,632 drivers was con
centrated at several selected cen
ters, arrangements are being
completed this year to provide
training at local centers, usually
in the same counties in which
the drivers live. The only ex
ceptions will be in those coun
ties where the number of drivers
to be trained is so small that it
is more practical to train them in
adjoining counties.
In announcing this plan. Chief
Commissioner Claude R. McMillan
said that it would enable the
school bus drivers to eat and
sleep at home while taking the
training, and that it would prove
considerably more economical to
the state than last year when
board and rooms were provided at
the several training centers.
The bus driving training is a
part of the Highway Department’s
safety program and is financed
by the department from its safety
fund. The fund is made' up of
safety fees paid by the motoring
public, Mr. McMillan explained.
Newberry and pledge myself to
abide by the results of the Demo
cratic primary elections.
LUTHER B. BEDENBAUGH
I hereby announce myself a
candidate for Commissioner from
District No. 1 and agree to abide
the results of the election.

"I REMEMBER
BY TKS OLD TIMERS
From Mrs. H. Stolman, Duluth,
Minn: I remember when we
drove an oxen team. When the>
saw water in the ditch, they would
pull over and have a drink and then
come back on the road.
From Mrs. J. C. Petty, Goldthaite
Texas: X remember when people
would go from house to house and
have old-time singing. People would
go for several miles in wagons,
camp for a week or several days
meeting. People go to worldly
things now.
From Mrs. Thomason, Colorado
Springs, Col.: I remember when
my mother raised the hops to make
the yeast to bake the bread in a
brick oven for our large family.
From Mrs. Russell Bugh, Fosston,
Minn.: Remember taking the bed
tick out to the big fresh straw pile
and filling it with new straw? The
first few nights one Would need a
step-ladder to climb into the high
bed. Straw was also used as a pad
for the “front room” carpet. The
Good Old Days? Perhaps!
From Mary Karch, Lake view, Ohio:
I remember when the well and
cistern would go dry in summer
we’d load the bobsled with tubs and
wash boiler and go to the creek
on wash day. Mother would take a
picnic dinner along, and we’d make
a day of it.
From E. E. Meredith, Fairmont
W. Va.: Do you remember when
ailroad trains were referred to a?
“the cars?”
(Mail your memories to TH?
OLD TIMER, Box 340, FRANK
FORT, KY.)
The Highway Department is
providing patrolmen to examine
and certify the drivers and to as
sist in the actual training. Public
school teachers In driver train
ing and \ education will complete
the staff of instructors at each
training center.
Each instructor selected is
qualified in driver training and
education and took part in train
ing school bus drvers last year.
Places where the courses are
to be held are designated by the
County Superintendents of Edu
cation. Of the enrolees, 2,379 are
white and 1,612 are Negro.
White and Negro students will
be trained separately. Each class
will be set up to handle a maxi
mum of 60 students. Where a
larger number of students are to
take a course, additional training
sessions are scheduled.
Students who are to participate
in the program are chosen by
local’ school officials.
To qualify for the training,
the student must be 16 years of
age, or older, and must have a
valid South Carolina drivers
license.
Each student must attend the
entire course which runs from 9
a.m. to 6 p.m daily, to qualify for
certification as a school bus driv

SACK TIES MAY BE CUT TO EQUAL LENGTHS with an axe, as
pictured. Wrap twine around blade of the axe as shown, then drive
the blade into a chopping block. This method assures uniform
lengths and saves time.
