Taylor Dies In Spartanburg Mrs. Lula Powell Taylor, 73, died Friday morning at the Spar tanburg general hospital. Mrs. Taylor was a native of Newberry county and was the daughter of the late George W. and Mrs. Dallas Perkins Merchant She was the wife, of J. W. Taylor and had made her home in Spar tanburg for a number of years. She is survived by her hus band, J. W. Taylor of Spartan burg; one son, Eugene Powell of High Point, N. C.; two daughters. Miss Nellie Powell of Columbia and Mrs. J. W. Lawson of Spar tanburg; and the following step children, Mrs. Raymond Thomas of Valley Falls, Mrs. Lawrence Strange of Walnut Grove, Mrs. E. H. Bishop of Spartanburg, Mrs. Lee Cooper of Greer, Miss Eloise Taylor, Mrs. Clyde Lusardi, Mrs. Ralph Smith, Lloyd Taylor, and Everette Taylor, all of Spartan burg; three brothers, Andrew Mer chant and Claude Merchant of Kinards, and Matthew Merchant of Newberry; three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Lee Bihsop of Kinards, and Mrs. Minnie Moates and Mrs. Lillie Bishop of Newberry; 38 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon from El Bethel Methodist church in Spartanburg with the Rev. J. G. Ferguson conducting the service. Interment followed in the Phila delphia Baptist church cemetery near Pauline. Mrs. McCullough, 77, Dies Saturday At Silverstreet Home Mrs. Julia Alewine McCollough, 77, died early Saturday morn ing at the home of her brother, J. M. Alewine, in Silverstreet She had been in ill health for the past five years. Mrs. Alewine was born and reared in the Mt. Pleasant section of Newberry county and was the daughter of the late W. F. and Mrs. Rebecca Cromer Alewine. Her husband, John McCollough, died a number of years ago. She was an active and devoted member of New Chappell Metho dist church and a member of the Womans Missionary society. She is survived by one brother, J. M. Alewine of Silverstreet, • and the following nephews and nieces, J. M. Alewine, Jr. of Charleston; Mrs. B. A. Westbrook of Rock Hill; Mrs. Martha Watts of Silverstreet; Mrs. Nancy Long shore and Mrs. Louise Goggins of Newberry, and Mrs. J. D. Wes- singer of Whitmire. A number of other relatives survive. Funeral services were held at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the grave side in Silverstreet Luther an church cemetery with the Rev. E. K. Counts and the Rev. R. C. Emory conducting the service. In terment followed in the church cemetery. Judge Sease Dies Friday In Spartanburg Thomas S. Sease, native of Newberry County and retired judge of the seventh judicial circuit, died at a Spartanburg hos pital last Friday afternoon. Judge Sease, 85, had been ill several days and underwent an operation early last week. He had been retired since 1948. He became judge of the seventh circuit in 1909, and- served con tinuously until his retirement He was succeeded to the bench by Bruce Littlejohn of Spartanburg. Funeral services were held in Spartanburg Sunday. He was appointed master in chancery by Gov. John Gary Evans in 1895 and was elected solicitor of the seventh circuit which then included Newberry County in 1896. He moved to Spartanburg shortly after this and was re elected for two more terms be fore being named to the beach. The jurist was twice married, first in 1893 to the late Lula Caughman of Edgefield County, and in 1921 to the former Eunice P. Calhoun of Abbeville" who sur vives. Other survivors include two foster daughters, Mrs. William H. Leaphart of Prosperity and Mrs. Fred James of Greer, and two sisters, Mrs. C. G. Wyche of Pros perity and Mrs. John Dominick of gUnards. Mrs. Wallace and Mrs. Linder mann will be accompained to Richmond by Editor Luther Aull of Johnston in his car. After graduation the Reverend and Mrs. Wallace will spend a month in Newberry with his mother, prior to leaving for Black- ey, Ky., where Mr. Wallace haft accepted pastorate of the First Presbyterian church. Lathrop Stricken Suddenly; Services Monday Forrest Robert (Shorty) Lath rop, 44, died en route to Newber ry County Memorial hospital last Saturday morning shortly after being stricken ill. He was the son of the late James Rufus and Molly Merchant Lathrop of Kinards and was a painter by trade. He was a mem ber of Sharon Methodist church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rose Louise Johnson Lath rop; two sons, James Curtis Lathrop of Sheppard Field, Texas, and Robert Ross Lathrop of Kin ards ; one brother, F. W. Lath rop, and one sister, Mrs. Bet ty Bobb, both of Newberry. Daughter Of Former Newberrian Passes At Greenwood Home Miss Frances Caroline Harman, 37, died Tuesday afternoon at her home in Greenwood; after a ser ious illness of several weeks. She was bom in Bamberg, January 31, 1915 and was the daughter of Mr. end Mrs. A. B. Harman of Greenwood. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church. Her mother is the former Miss Sadie Pearson of Newberry. Mrs. Harman was born and reared in Newberry and at one time resided on Harrington steet, and was em ployed by the Herald and News.
