Seventy three fatal accidents
occurred during 1951 when motor*
ists crossed the white ^center line
and were driving on the wrong
side of the road, a traffic ac
cident study of the State Highway
Department shows.
This driving error was shown
on the report of nearly nine per
cent of the 630 fatal accidents oc
curring in South Carolina during
the year.
Personal injuries took place in
384 cases where drivers were on
the wrong side of the road, as
shown in the accompanying il
lustration, and property damage
was counted in 748 cases.
The total number of accidents
which occurred because of this
improper pratice* was 1205, the
study indicates.
In commenting on the report,
Chief Commissioner Claude R. Mc
Millan appealed to motorists to
drive on the right side of the road
at all times except when passing
and never to pass other vehicles
on blind hills and curves. Driving
left of the center line frequently
results in head-on colisions, the
most deadly type of accident, Mr
McMillan said.

winter or summer.
Farmers find it does a better
job at each lubrication point
than the "specialized” greases
they formerly used.
FARM ADVANTAGES at-a-glain:
1. A finer grease at every point.
2. Less danger of applying the wrong grease.
2. Quicker greasing operations.
4. Smaller grease stocks — one instead of 3 or 4.
5. Fewer grease guns.
6. Less waste.

As a kid I was thrilled by
the idea I got from a man
about five miles below home on
the road to grandma's. He had
him a platform up in a tree
where he took his noon nap. ]
passed there the other day. The
house was still there. But the
old oak tree that stood in the
yard was gone. And strangers
lived in the house.
Tree houses! Where is that a
country boy that hasn't built e'm!
I had two. One was a sort of
swinging hammock in the dense
honeysuckle vines that took our
scuppernong arbor. It was only
about six feet off the ground.
But I felt like I was up in the
very sky when I hid there on hot
summer days to get out of work.
And I often went to sleep. There
was no danger. For you couldn’t
fall out. You had to climb out.
My other one was away up in
tht very comb of our two-story
barn. There I was really up
yonder, perhaps 25 feet. With
great difficultly, Zeke, my colored
playmate, and I carried odd
boards up there. I still can’t
see how we did it, climbing with
one hand and toting with the
other. Then holding and nailing
the first foundation boards up
there. But we did. And the re
sult was a platform like the man
had in the tree down there on
Hollinshed creek. We spent a
lot of time up there playing. But
I never let myself go to sleep
for fear of falling off. One night
I dreamed I was falling from up
there. And when I hit the floor
I thought sure I was all broken
up from the high fall I thought
1 had gotten. My, what a scare!
I always thought that man was
very brave to sleep up in that
tree on that platform.
