PAGE EIGHT Mrs. Wynstanley To Marry Peter Davis Saturday Evening Of cordial interest is the an nouncement of the approaching marriage of Peter Davis of New York City and Ney Canaan. Conn., and Mrs. Frederica Wyn stanley, also of New Canaan, which will take place Saturday evening, April 19, at six o’clock in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church ofr Newberry. The Rev. Edwin B. Clippard, rector of the church, will perform the ceremony to be attended by the family and a few close friends of the couple. The wedding supper or infare will be an old fashioned Southern Barbecue given immediately after the ceremony at. Mill Stream Farm, the country home of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Davis. Out of town guests attending the wedding will be Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Eskridge of Shelby, N. C., Mr. and Mrs. Frank Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Tabor and Hillery Matthews, all of New York City • Mr. Davis is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Davis of New berry. He is a business manager of the Theatre Guild of New York City. Rev. & Mrs. Harman Observe Anniversary Of 54th Wedding The Rev. and Mrs. Julian B. Harman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Monday, April 14, at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Bloomer F. Hawk ins on Nance street with whom they are now making their home. The occasion was attended by the members of the immediate family and a few friends. Mr. Harman, a widely known Lutheran minister, retired several years ago after serving for many years pastorates in Saluda, Edge- field, Aiken, Lexington and New berry Counties and at Senoia, Ga. His first pastorate was in his home church, Corinth Luther an Church in Saluda county. St. Marks Lutheran church was also in his first charge. The Rev. and Mrs. Harman were married April 14, 1898 at the home of Mrs. Harman’s parents, Jesse and Martha Dei> rick Wessinger at Chapin. Rev. Harman is the son of the late J. Callie and Elizabeth Ballentine Harman of Saluda County. Rev. Harman has a record probably above the average for a pastor, in the large number of marriages which he has perform ed and he has likewise officiated at a large number of funerals. The couple are the parents of five living children: Mrs. L. M. Matthews, Columbia; Mrs. John S. Riddle, Charleston; Mrs. C. B. Bowers, Columbia; J. B. Har man, Jr., Columbia and Mrs. Bloomer *F. Hawkins, Newberry. They also have twelve grandchil dren and six great grandchildren. Hill-Pm*cell Wedding* Be Solemnized May Third In Sumter Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Ben jamin Hill of Sumter, announce the engagement of their daughter, Myrle Mills, to Mr. Keitt Pur cell. The wedding will take place on Saturday, (May third at eight o’- cock in the evening at the First Baptist Church in Sumter. Miss Hill attended the Sum ter city schools and Blue Moun tain College in Mississippi, and graduated from Judson College, Marion, Alabama in 1950. She graduated with an A.B. degree in psychology and sociology, and since graduation she has been employed with the South Caro- iina Department of Public Wel fare in Winnsboro. Mr. Purcell, the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Purcell at tended the Newberry city schools, and graduated from The Citadel in Charleston with the class of 1946, in Business Administration. His education was interrupted at The Citadel, when he was called for active duty during World War II, where he served for three years as a member of the Corps of Engineers in the Army, two years of which was on duty in the European theatre. After receiving his discharge from the Army in 1946 he return ed to The Citadel, and since graduation has been connected with the Purcell business firm in Newberry. Taylor-Johnson Rites Performed At Home Of Dr. J. B. Harman Miss Sara Nell Johnson and Clyde Ramie Taylor were united in marriage April 11, 1952 at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Hawkins, 2019 Nance street, New berry, and, also, that of the of ficiating minister, the Rev. J. B. Harman, D.D. The ring ceremony was used They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. J, H. Bundrick, brother- in-law and sister of the bride. Mrs. Taylor is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Johnson, Route 3, Newberry. She is a graduate of the Silver Street High School. She was beautifully attired in a blue suit with blue and white accessories and a corsage of white carnations. Mr. Taylor is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Taylor, 2809 Hunt Avenue, Newberry. He attended the Newberry Schools; and has served in the U. S. Navy five years, part of the time in World War II and part of the time In the Korean area. At present he is employed by the North Brothers in insulation work. Carpenter’s THE NEWBERRY SUN Mrs. Stone Installed Auxiliary President Mrs. Theresa Stone was install ed as President of the Ladies Auxiliary to Livingston-Wise Post 5968, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Installation cermonies Monday Night, April 14, at the VFW Home. Mrs. Lillian Gilmer was the installing officer. Mrs. Stone succeeds Evelyn Burns who headed the Auxiliary for the past year. She has been an active member of the auxilary since its organization and has held several offices during this time. Other officers installed Monday were: Virginia Moon, Sr. Vice- President; Dessa Burns, Jr. Vice- President; Ruby Trice, Treasurer; Kathryn Senn, Secretary; Chap lain, Lera Duncan; Doris Sanders, Conductress; Dorothy Jennings, Guard; Evelyn Burns, Trustee. The high light of the Auxili ary’s past year was the visit of the National Auxiliary President, Mrs. Ethel Griffith, on January 29. The auxiliary plans to in crease its membership this year and continue its service to the community, to the state, and to the nation. Musicians Hold (continued from gape one) There were no nominations from the. floor. The members on the above list were unanimously elected to serve next year. The president then introduced Miss Margaret Paysinger as the Program Leader. Miss Paysinger used as her theme “The Influence of Environment on Music.” She dealt with Greek, Hebrew, Egypt ian music, music as mentioned in the Old and New Testaments, tnusic of Martin Luther and the introduction, of Congregtional sing ing, and the use of a hymn book printed in the German language, and the music of Bach and Man- del. The first musical number on the program was a record of the music of Pope Gregory and of Palestrina. This was followed by a two- piano number, “Sheep May Safely Graze” by Bach, played by Mrs. J. P. Moon and Robert Creek- more (guest). The next number was a piano solo, ‘«My Heart Ever Faithful” by Bach, played by Mrs. E. R. McConnell. Mrs. R. D. Coleman, accom panied by Mrs. J. E. Wiseman, sang a group of two numbers, "He Shall Feed His Flock” and “Fath er in Heaven,” both by Hendel. The last number was a tenor solo rendered by Mr. William Jor dan. He sang “King Ever Glori ous” form The Crucification by John Stainer. His accompanist was Miss Mary E. Fowler. Mr. French thanked all who had taken part on the program. Brady, 227 Randolph street, Ports mouth, Va., 21 acres, $500. Funeral Conducted For Mrs. Fennell’s Father In Charlotte Funeral services for John L. Thomas, father of Mrs. W. M. Fennell, who died Tuesday in a hospital in Charlotte, N. C., were held Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m., at the Statesville Avenue Baptist church in Charlotte. He had been in declining health for several years and seriously ill for three days. Mr. Thomas was born Nov. 2, 1878, in Union County, the son of the late David and Mary Austin Thomas. He was a mem ber of Statesville Avenue Bap tist Church. The Rev. Guy Helms, pastor, conducted the services, assisted by the Rev. W. E. Entrekin of Wilmot Baptist Church. Burial was in Oakland cemetery. Pallbearers were J. H. Morton, Ted Jordan, Harvey Jordan, Thomas L. Jordan, Davis Thomas, and Mac Fennell of Newberry, grandsons of Mr. Thomas. The deacons of Statesville Avenue Baptist Church were honary pall bearers. Survivors include four daugh ters, Mrs. Ora Lee Jordan, Mrs. T. B. Simpson and Mrs. Cecil Helms of Charlotte, and Mrs. W. M. Fennell of Newberry; four sons, C. Cecil Thomas and J. J. Thomas of Charlotte, J. C. Thomas of Clinton and P. D. Thomas of Morganton; two sis ters, 'Mrs. C. S. Lawrence and Mrs. J. L. Clanton of Charlotte; 28 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
