Capt. Roy AndOrson
Awarded Btonze Star
In Korean Theatre
The Bronze Star Medal with
“V’’ device has been awarded
to Capt. Wiliam R. Anderson Jr.,
of 2015 Mayer ave., Newberry,
for “heroism and outstanding de
votion to duty’’ during the battle
for “Heartbreak Ridge.”
Captain Anderson, a member
of the 39th Field Artillery Bat
talion, was serving as an artillery
forward observer with infantry
units during an attack on strong
ly defended Red emplacement
near Satae-ri on Sept. 26, 1951.
The citation accompanying the
decoration states that the ad
vance was halted by a murderous
enemy artillery and mortar bar
rage. Captain Anderson im
mediately left his place of com
parative safety and moved
through the terible cannonade
to locate tl^e enemy emplacements
and radio for artillery support.
“With complete disregard for
his personal safety and the in
tense hostile fire, the citation
continues, “he continued in this
manner until the enemy resis
tance was lessened to a point
where friendly elements were
able to regroup and consolidate
their positions.
“The heroism and outstanding
devotion to duty displayed by
Captain Anderson on this occas
ion reflect great credit upon him
self and the military service.
Captain Anderson is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. W. Roy Anderson
Sr., Mayer Avenue.
