First Cotton Run Through Oakland
Mill In 1912; Plant Now Owned By
Kendal! Enlarged And Modernized
One of the interesting textile
manufacturing plants of Newber
ry is the recently modernized and
expanded Oakland Plant of The
Kendall Mills, division of The
Kendall Company. The plant is
located about 1^4 miles from the
center of Newberry on lands form
erly owned by the late Col. W. Y.
Fair. The elevated land on which
the plant is located provides good
natural drainage and is • ideal
for a manufacturing establish
ment. Numerous trees of many
varieties add their natural beauty
to the mill and the adjacent
village.
The Oakland Cotton Mills as
the plant was known when it was
incorporated on August 3, 1910,
had an authorized capital of
$400,000. The late Col. Walter
The Final OK
Had To Come
From The Top
H. Hunt was its organizer and
first president.
The first cotton was run
through the new Oakland Mill
on March 8, 1912, but it was
July of that year before the plant
was in full operation. The 20,-
160 spindles and 542 looms in
the original mill consumed about
400 bales of cotton, annually.
About 225 people from this com
munity were employed in the
manufacture of wide sheeting N and
print cloth which were the
principal output for a number
of years.
In May of 1925 The Kendall
Company acquired Oakland Mill.
Since that time the plant has
been a part of this concern which
has as one of its principal mark
et^ the hospital dressings which
use surgical gauze. Oakland was
soon geared for the production
of exceptional quality cloth which
was used in the manufacture of
surgical gauze sold under the
Curity and later the Bauer and
Black trademarks. The mill
then had 30,464 spindles and 660
looms.
In 1949 The Kendall Company
began a modernization program
at Oakland Mill. Some of the
old machinery was brought up
to date, but a greater portion of
it was replaced with the latest
cotton textile machinery. The
mill was planned and arranged
as far as possible to allow for
eventual expansion to a larger
mill.
Early in 1950 The Kendall
Company decided to begin the ex*
pansion of the modernized mill.
Plans were brought up to date,
machinery was ordered and final
ly actual construction of the
building addition was started in
April of that year. Careful plan
ning and scheduling resulted in
the arrival of the hew machinery
just as the building was being
completed in September. The fol
lowing four months found the
mill personnel busily engaged in
the installation of machinery
which would double Oakland’s
productive capacity. In January
of this year the modern Oak
land Mill with 61000 modern
spindles and 1440 looms was in
operation.
Today we have in our com
munity a bigger and better Oak
land Mill—a cotton mill which
consumes about 20,000 bales of
cotton each year in the manu
facture of cloth. Oakland furnish
es year around employment in
comfortable and pleasant work
ing conditions to over six hun
dred people. The annual payroll
at Oakland of approximately
$1,800,000 is a large contribution
to the economy of the thriving
city of Newberry and surrounding
area. On next Tuesday and
Wednesday the public will have
an opportunity to see the opera
tions of this modern industrial
plant
